New clues as to why some older people may be losing their memory

ScienceDaily (Dec. 29, 2011) ? New research links 'silent strokes,' or small spots of dead brain cells, found in about one out of four older adults to memory loss in the elderly. The study is published in the January 3, 2012, print issue of Neurology?, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

"The new aspect of this study of memory loss in the elderly is that it examines silent strokes and hippocampal shrinkage simultaneously," said study author Adam M. Brickman, PhD, of the Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer's Disease and the Aging Brain at Columbia University Medical Center in New York.

For the study, a group of 658 people ages 65 and older and free of dementia were given MRI brain scans. Participants also underwent tests that measured their memory, language, speed at processing information and visual perception. A total of 174 of the participants had silent strokes.

The study found people with silent strokes scored somewhat worse on memory tests than those without silent strokes. This was true whether or not people had a small hippocampus, which is the memory center of the brain.

"Given that conditions like Alzheimer's disease are defined mainly by memory problems, our results may lead to further insight into what causes symptoms and the development of new interventions for prevention. Since silent strokes and the volume of the hippocampus appeared to be associated with memory loss separately in our study, our results also support stroke prevention as a means for staving off memory problems," said Brickman.

The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health.

Smart Guide to 2012: Neutrinos may be tachyons

Next year, experiments will test claims of particles breaking the cosmic speed limit - but how to meld these misbehaving particles with the rest of physics?

Read more: "Smart Guide 2012: 10 ideas you'll want to understand"

For a few days in September 2011, it was the biggest story in the world. The little-known OPERA experiment in Gran Sasso, Italy, had just made an electrifying claim - that subatomic particles called neutrinos had travelled faster than the speed of light. Next year, two experiments - MINOS at Fermilab in Batavia, Illinois, and T2K in Japan (pictured) - will be able to test the claim. If it stands up, how should we meld these misbehaving particles with the rest of physics?

One option is via tachyons, hypothetical particles that are born speeding faster than light. It turns out that the speed limit imposed by Einstein's special theory of relativity isn't so much a cap that nothing can exceed as a barrier that nothing can cross. Tachyons were dreamed up to illustrate this: particles born faster than light pose no problem for special relativity as long as they spend their whole lives in the fast lane.

Are neutrinos tachyons? One way they might be is if the universe is filled with a field that interacts with particles as they fly through it. If photons have more drag in that field than neutrinos do, then neutrinos would naturally outpace the speed of light. This idea may feel familiar: light travels slower in glass than in a vacuum, for instance. So the universe might be permeated with a sort of diffuse glass.

If neutrinos do turn out to be tachyons, theorists will still have their work cut out. Though they are born speeding, tachyons interfere with another demand of special relativity: that a particle's behaviour be the same no matter where it is facing or how fast it is going. Meanwhile, there is no shortage of other theories scrabbling to explain this most astonishing of results.

Erie, Pa. High-School Coach Takes On "Boy Lovers" And "Selfish Pig" Girlfriends In Email Rant [Coaching Meltdowns]

Erie, Pa. High-School Coach Takes On "Boy Lovers" And "Selfish Pig" Girlfriends In Email Rant Chet Moffett (right, collecting trash) is the cross-country coach at Cathedral Preparatory School in Erie, Pa. He's also a guidance counselor. And just last week, he was totally pissed off about the lack of fan support for Prep's basketball team in its 51-46 loss to General McLane High. Or as he referred to it in an epic 468-word rant emailed out to the entire student body, "General McLame." Zing!

He went on from there:

Chet Moffett's e-mail ... said students who preferred to sit with their parents should "cut the umbilical cord and grow a pair," and referred to students who sat with classmates as "boy lovers."

In response to students who chose to sit with their girlfriends, Moffett wrote "if she made or wanted you to sit with her, then she is a high maintenance, selfish pig and you should dump her now."

Moffett also ... called General McLane fans "mayonnaise sandwich eating, sister loving, trailer park dwelling clowns."

Makes sense. After all, mayonnaise is an incestual spread. However, Moffett quickly realized the error of his typing ways and apologized for "a complete lapse of judgment on my part, and although it would seem otherwise, it does not represent who I strive to be as a person."

He offered to resign a couple times, but apparently the Cathedral Prep elders were content to take two weeks of pay away from their lead spirit guide. Anyway, here's the full text of Email No. 1 in which Moffett emailed the school's student body with his "winter sports briefing":

Gentlemen ?
I wanted to drop you all a line and give you my thoughts on Tuesday's basketball game at general mcLame. I have been a coach here at Prep since 1998; so I have witnessed my share of close games (wins and losses), and I am fine with that.

What I am not ok with is the fact that during the game, the GM student body out did us! It pains me to say that, but it's true. I was perplexed about this during the game, because I did notice that we had our usual cast that have showed incredible school spirit in the past; then after the game, I counted 36 (and I'm sure I missed a few) Prep students that chose not to sit in the cheering section.

Gentlemen ? that is unacceptable!!

I asked one student that did not sit in the cheering section and his reply was, "I wanted to sit with my girlfriend". My reply was simple, "If she made or wanted you sit with her, then she is a high maintenance, selfish pig and you should dump her now and if you wanted to sit with her and ignore your brethren on the floor, then join [a former Prep student who since has transferred] at mercyworst!" In other words there is no excuse!

Another student told me that he wanted to sit with his parents. My reply, "Cut the umbilical cord and grow a pair!" In other words there is no excuse!

Another kid told me that he just wanted to "hang out with his friends". I had no reply; I have no patience for boy lovers!

Guys ? there are no excuses for not cheering for your school!

Understand guys ? we set the standard with our cheering section! We were named the best fans in the state by the Pittsburgh Post Gazette! That's 150 miles away! Every news crew in this town wants to cover our games because of our cheering section! The 36 plus that didn't cheer for their school (and you know who you are) should be ashamed of themselves! You have chosen to be a part of a Brotherhood that no other school will ever understand! Your classmates make sacrifices in blood, sweat, tears to represent this school ? show your support!

Every game we go to our goal should be to make the opposing team, their family and their coaches as uncomfortable as possible! I hold the entire school accountable! Never should a bunch of mayonnaise sandwich eating, sister loving, trailer park dwelling clowns at general mclane ever chant "we can't hear you" to Cathedral Prep! Let's show our support to all winter sports (basketball, hockey, swimming and wrestling) and do it the Cathedral Prep way!

Please fix this!

Have a wonderful holiday,
Coach Moffett

Egads. Someone's got spirit, yeah, got spirit, yeah, got spirit, yeah; he's got what, what, what, what, a whatwhatwhatwhatwhatwhatwhat. Someone also probably got a good Cathedral Prep talking-to. A few days later came this mass email:

Gentlemen ?
Last Thursday I sent you all an email about our cheering section at the basketball game. Since that time I have received lots of feedback, both positive and negative. I sat down and looked at the email again and I realized I was wrong.

Guys ? I sent the email mainly to inspire and motivate our student body. Although I did not attend Cathedral Prep, I am extremely committed to this school and what it stands for and it frustrates me when I see Men of Prep not reaching their potential. It was an attempt to reach you all; however, I have come to realize that my email was hurtful, distasteful and unprofessional.

Please understand, homophobic statements, the mentioning of former students and degrading comments about women are not (and never should be) part of the vernacular of a Man of Prep. For that, I am truly sorry.

If you noticed this year, there are signs all around the building that describe the "Profile of a Rambler". It is broken down into four different categories: Spirituality, Intellectual Competence, Self-discipline and Community Awareness. After reading all of these I realize that I failed you all. I will be much more vigilant in the future and hope you all can accept my sincerest apology.

Have a wonderful holiday,
Coach Moffett

Not for nothing, Coach's positive feedback must have been something to behold.

OU football notebook

"As a child, we didn't have much money," sophomore defensive back Tony Jefferson said before the team split up last week. "As a family, we grouped together and kicked it together, just chilled and watched movies and stuff. That was the greatest gift I could have, just being part of my family.

"Since my sister has been gone to Korea for the Army, this Christmas will be the first time we've been together for four years. I'm excited to go home (to San Diego) and be with family again."

Running thin: Sophomore Roy Finch might start the Insight Bowl against Iowa, though there could be some discipline still awaiting for a police citation Finch got for allegedly vandalizing a computer.

Finch said he was taken aback when freshman Brandon Williams announced his transfer last week.

"When J Mill (Jonathan Miller) and Jermie Calhoun left, I was shocked," Finch said. "When Brandon decided to leave, I looked around the locker room and we only had two true running backs in the locker room, beside Dom (Whaley, who's out with a broken leg). We only have three running backs and we started off with seven or eight.

"Looking around the locker room, I was like, 'Coach, we're thin. We're all we've got right now.' We have to stick together and play as a team and fight through it."

Clay work: If Finch doesn't start, look for sophomore Brennan Clay to regain the starting role he had the first three weeks of the season before Whaley's emergence.

Clay has had a tough stretch since he took a hard hit in Game 4 against Ball State. He rushed for 159 yards (3.9 per carry) in the first three games, but has just 71 (2.8 per carry) in the seven games. He missed two games because of a shoulder/neck injury on the hit by Ball State.

"I don't know, man, it's just nerves. It's not muscle or anything you can take care of with therapy. It just takes time," Clay said.

"We keep banging every day, so it never got a chance to settle. I'm constantly strengthening my neck. It's not so much muscles, it's a nerve. Every time it gets triggered by a big hit, it bothers me."

Still, Clay said he's feeling better than he has in a long time.

"I feel good. I feel 100 percent," he said. "My legs feel good and strong."

Getting reps: One reason teams that go to bowls continue to go to bowls is the invaluable extra practice time players get in December. Most of the first week goes strictly to the young players, backups and redshirts and walk-ons who were unable to get many snaps during the season. Most of the rest of the practice time goes to players on the two-deep.

For someone like right tackle Lane Johnson, who's in his first year as a starter, it's a time for growth, perfecting one's technique through intense coaching and repetition. During the season, much of that gets lost in game-planning.

"Bowl practice is sort of like an extra spring for us," Johnson said. "We'll have 10 here (in Norman) and five when we get to Arizona. It's my first year. I'm always looking to improve and get better on my technique. Next year I'll probably move to left, so I'm working both sides."

Iowa connections: Much has been made of Iowa being the alma mater of OU head coach Bob Stoops (1978-82). But two Sooner assistants also played at Iowa: Jay Norvell (1982-86) and Bruce Kittle (1977-79, '81).

At times, things got a bit weird around the Switzer Center last week.

"They all played together," Johnson said. "I've noticed, they know everybody from Iowa. That's where they grew up. Yeah, I want to go out with a win and let them have some trash talking over their old alma mater."

Bengals trying hard to sell out final game (AP)

CINCINNATI ? Hot dogs, cotton candy, hot chocolate and water. The Bengals offered refreshments Monday to fans who lined up for a ticket promotion aimed at filling Paul Brown Stadium for the final game.

The Bengals made a buy-one, get-one-free offer to season ticket holders for the final regular season game Sunday. Cincinnati (9-6) would clinch a wild card playoff berth by beating the Baltimore Ravens (11-4).

The challenge is to fill the 65,500-seat stadium, which has been one-third empty for most games this season. The Bengals have sold out only one home game, when Pittsburgh brought thousands of fans.

Cincinnati sold 41,273 tickets for its victory over Arizona on Saturday that gave the Bengals only their third winning record in the last 21 years. Fans are upset over the franchise's dismal showing and ownership's reluctance to change.

The team sold a "couple thousand" tickets Monday morning, said Jeff Berding, the team's director of ticket sales.

"We have a lot of tickets to sell," Berding said. "The response has been great."

If the team doesn't sell out with this promotion restricted to season ticket holders, it will consider a discount offer to the public.

After Saturday's win, Bengals players practically begged fans to fill the stadium for the final game.

"We had a very enthusiastic stadium last week," coach Marvin Lewis said Monday. "I tell these guys, `I can't wait to see us play.' I think people that haven't seen us play in person will have a good time. We'll do some incredible things. We'll do some things I wish we didn't quite do, I'll tell you that. But we'll do some incredible things. It will be a good football game."

Iran rejects NY judge's ruling on Sept. 11 attacks (AP)

TEHRAN, Iran ? Iran has rejected a New York judge's finding that Tehran is liable in the Sept. 11 attacks along with the Taliban and al-Qaida.

According to state TV, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman referred to last week's judgment as "clumsy scenario-making" by the U.S.

The spokesman, Ramin Mehmanparast, repeated Iran's insistence that al-Qaida has no presence in the country.

On Thursday, Judge George Daniels in Manhattan signed a default judgment finding Iran, the Taliban and al-Qaida liable in the 2001 attacks. The ruling came in a $100 billion lawsuit brought by family members of victims.

The findings also said Iran provides al-Qaida members a safe haven.

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has repeatedly denied any Iranian connection to the Sept. 11 attacks or to al-Qaida.

At least 38 dead in Haitian shipwreck off Cuba (Reuters)

HAVANA (Reuters) ? At least 38 people died on Saturday when a boat carrying Haitian migrants sunk off the coast of Guantanamo province in far eastern Cuban, Cuban television reported.

It said 87 people, including seven women, were rescued after Cuban civil defense forces spotted the boat 100 meters off Punta Maisi, which is about 600 miles southeast of Havana.

There were no details on possible cause of the accident or the destination of the boat, but search and rescue efforts were still underway, the report said.

The dead included 21 men and 17 women, it said.

Iraq pullout a "signature failure" for Obama: Romney (Reuters)

LITTLETON, New Hampshire (Reuters) ? Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on Thursday attacked U.S. President Barack Obama for a "signature failure" to keep some troops in Iraq to prevent the country falling back into sectarian conflict.

Just days after U.S. troops left Iraq, a wave of bombings killed at least 72 people in Baghdad on Thursday. The Shi'ite-led government is engulfed in a crisis that risks fracturing Iraq along sectarian and ethnic fault lines.

A consistent front-runner in polls of Republicans, Romney said he feared leaving Iraq without a stabilization force could put the hard-earned successes and victories there at risk.

"I hope that risk is not realized. I hope that we're able to see stability there but the president's failure to secure an agreement and maintain 10,000 to 30,000 troops in Iraq has to be one of his signature failures," he told Reuters.

Romney was speaking in an interview on his campaign bus in New Hampshire. The former governor of Massachusetts is among the top two candidates to win the Republican nomination to take on Obama in November, 2012.

In widespread comments on foreign policy, Romney rejected the transfer of Taliban prisoners from the Guantanamo Bay military prison into Afghan government custody as part of a secret dialogue to end the Afghan war.

He also accused Obama's of falling far short in his handling of the economy despite some signs of strength such as a drop in the unemployment rate to 8.6 percent from 9 percent.

Republicans will use Iraq against Obama in the election campaign if the country descends into violence again after the recent U.S. withdrawal. Thursday's attacks there are the first sign of rising violence since Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki moved to sideline Sunni rivals.

The White House expressed solidarity with Iraq after the bombings. "Attempts such as this to derail Iraq's continued progress will fail," spokesman Jay Carney said in a statement.

White House negotiations with Iraq over a follow-on troop presence fell apart over a Pentagon demand that Iraq provide U.S. troops with immunity against prosecution in Iraq for any crimes committed there. Iraq's government was unwilling to meet that demand, and its political elite were divided over a post-2011 U.S. military presence.

CHINA, NORTH KOREA

Romney, a multi-millionaire businessman who has little foreign policy experience, showed a fair grasp of global affairs in the interview. Romney was relaxed and casual on his bus with wife Ann and senior aides.

He urged China to exert its influence to help North Korea to move to a more open society and rein in its nuclear arsenal after leader Kim Jong-il's death.

"China has by far the greatest influence and this is an occasion for China to exert its influence in a way to move towards a more open society, and to encourage the regime to avoid the promotion of nuclear technology to other parts of the world," Romney said.

"China has to recognize that North Korea's participation in nuclear proliferation cannot be tolerated forever," he said.

He continued his drumbeat of criticism of China's trade policies that the United States says amounts to manipulation of its currency.

"I think China has to recognize that currency manipulation and in particular theft of intellectual property and hacking into computer is something which a society is not going to endure without a response," he said.

Romney was sharply critical of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who is working to regain the presidency over the protests of thousands of Russians who have led peaceful demonstrations.

He said Putin has "returned to some of the more heated rhetoric of the past" and added, "I think he endangers the stability and peacefulness of the globe."

He commented on a Reuters exclusive story this week that revealed secret talks with the Taliban had focused on the possible transfer of several Taliban prisoners at Guantanamo Bay to Afghan custody.

"I don't believe in releasing prisoners as part of a terrorist negotiation. And we do not negotiate with terrorists. The Taliban are terrorists, they are our enemy and I do not believe in a prisoner release exchange," he said.

Analysis: Economy to show stamina as global growth slows (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The economy is gaining momentum and should push through next year with only a few bruises despite an almost certain European recession and slower global growth.

A firming in the anemic labor market should put the economy in reasonable shape to withstand headwinds from overseas, although the recovery will likely slow at the start of the year after a surprisingly solid fourth quarter.

"The U.S. economy will be one of the better stories in an otherwise gloomy global economy next year," said Sung Won Sohn, an economics professor at California State University in the Channel Islands. "It will not go into recession."

Data from employment to manufacturing imply U.S. growth will top a 3 percent annual rate in the fourth quarter, which would be the fastest pace in 18 months.

Much of that expansion reflects the release of pent-up demand for autos and a restocking of inventories by businesses, temporary factors that could lead to a lull early in 2012.

But a healing labor market provides a signal of a more-lasting and fundamental strengthening of the recovery.

The jobless rate fell to a 2-1/2 year low of 8.6 percent in November and first-time claims for jobless benefits have dropped to the lowest level since early 2008.

That's good news for the consumers who drive two-thirds of economic activity.

"The consumer is going to be able to spend simply because job growth is picking up," said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors in Holland, Pennsylvania. "As job growth picks up, income picks up."

RECOILING FROM EUROPE

Many economists now look for growth of between 2.3 percent and 3 percent in 2012, even given the clouds overseas.

While far from stellar, that would mark an acceleration from an expected 2 percent expansion this year and it could offer some mild relief to President Barack Obama, whose handling of the economy is key to his re-election hopes.

The debt crisis in Europe and bickering over budget policy in Washington are the biggest threats.

"The key question is whether the economy will be allowed to run on its own internal dynamics," said Anthony Karydakis, chief economist at Commerzbank in New York.

A political stand-off over extending an expiring payroll tax cut and benefits for the long-term unemployed had raised the risk a fiscal brake would abruptly slow the economy at the start of the new year.

However, lawmakers on Thursday announced an agreement to continue the provisions for two months, setting up a decisive vote in the House of Representatives on Friday.

The action looks set to push the political brinkmanship into February, offering a temporary reprieve for the economy. Analysts warned that a failure to renew the measures could chop up to 1.5 percentage points off growth, raising recession risks.

As for Europe, economists expect just a mild downturn. A deep one could push up the value of the dollar and put a big pinch on exports.

As it is, a slower global expansion is already likely to take the shine off exports, though they account for only about 13 percent of U.S. gross domestic product. The euro zone's share of that slice is about 13 percent.

"Even assuming an incredibly dire scenario where import growth in the euro zone tumbled by 10 percent, the impact on U.S. GDP growth would be negligible," said Michelle Girard, a senior economist at RBS in Stamford, Connecticut.

For U.S. multinational manufacturers like General Electric Co and Emerson Electric Co, Europe is the biggest worry and they are already reducing their footprints on the continent.

"The reality (is) that Europe is in a recession and could be in a recession for most of 2012," said Emerson Chief Executive Dave Farr. In contrast, the St. Louis-based company said it sees healthy U.S. demand.

Concerns over Europe have also led financial analysts to scale back profit expectations.

Earnings for firms in the Standard & Poor's 500 index are seen growing 5.8 percent in the first quarter of the next year, down sharply from a forecast of more than 10 percent in October and much slower than the 18 percent growth logged in the third quarter, according to Thomson Reuters Proprietary Research.

FINANCIAL MARKETS MELTDOWN

The gravest European threat lies outside of exports and in the financial sector. But most economists do not believe the euro zone debt crisis will spark a crisis in the United States.

"If you stabilize the financial sector and you don't have the kind of financial crisis we had in 2008, why do we have to have the economy we had in 2009?" asked Naroff.

With the U.S. economy poised for steady growth, many analysts have set aside earlier expectations that the Federal Reserve will launch a further round of asset purchases.

"I think they will be on hold for a while, unless something happens in Europe and signs of a slowdown in the U.S. emerge again," said Adolfo Laurenti, deputy chief economist, Mesirow Financial in Chicago.

Of course, not everyone is so sanguine. For example PIMCO, the home of the world's largest bond fund, expects growth no better than 1 percent and perhaps no expansion at all.

But there are signs of life even in the depressed U.S. housing market, where building could contribute to growth for the first time since 2005.

In addition, state and local government revenues are starting to trend higher, which should allow them to spend a bit after a long period of belt-tightening.

Business spending could soften somewhat, although analysts do not expect a sharp pull back given that corporations are sitting on about $2 trillion in cash.

"With that amount of liquidity, you would expect some contribution to growth from continued capital spending," said Commerzbank's Karydakis.

Bachmann starts Iowa bus tour, hopes for comeback (AP)

ORANGE CITY, Iowa ? Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann rumbled through Iowa by bus on Friday, hoping her campaign can stage a caucus comeback to begin the GOP's nominating process.

The Minnesota congresswoman is lagging in the polls and trying to recapture the momentum she lost since summer. She set out on a 99-county bus tour that ferried her from restaurants to catering companies, from a sports bar to a bakery.

"Now is our chance for redemption," Bachmann told supporters packed into The Dutch Bakery to hear her final sales pitch ahead of the Jan. 3 caucuses.

"I'm not here to trash anyone," she said ? and then criticized the two men leading the GOP race.

"Mitt Romney is the only governor in history of the United States to put into place socialized medicine," she said.

On Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker who has seen a surge in recent weeks, she said: "Newt has been backing the individual health care mandate for 20 years."

"I am the only consistent constitutional conservative. I'm not a convenient conservative," Bachmann told reporters in Sioux City.

At her campaign events, Bachmann walked around the rooms, posed for pictures and signed autographs.

"Do you want to take a picture? I see you brought a camera," she said as she maneuvered through one event.

"You've got your beautiful Christmas sweater on," she said to another woman.

Aides kept her moving along, noting the busy schedule they have put together for a candidate looking to turn around her political fortunes with time running short.

Bachmann won an early test vote in August in Ames but quickly fell as Texas Gov. Rick Perry entered the race that same day and stole her spotlight. Erratic behavior and lackluster debate performances left voters sour on Perry, and many moved on to pizza executive Herman Cain. He has since exited the race, fueling a late rise for Gingrich.

Bachmann, noting the fluid nature of the race, is hoping for a second shot.

"It's been like a political Wall Street; people have been up, down, up, down," she said at a catering company in Rock Hill.

"We are seeing a whole rejiggering going on of the political calculus. We are on the upswing right now," she told supporters. "We're seeing a completely difference change of momentum. My plan, with your help, is to be the nominee."

While she has been relegated to the second tier in the polls, many voters remain undecided and open to hearing from her.

"I'm struggling. I've been able to eliminate some, but there are three or four that I'm still looking at," said Curtis Jacob, a 35-year-old who supported Mike Huckabee four years ago. "I definitely have not eliminated Bachmann. She could still be on the top of my list."

Hence, Bachmann's late pitch.

"They may not even agree with me on all the issues, but they know I'm not going to lie to them. They know I'm going to do what I say," she said.

And one by one, she seemed to sway caucusgoers.

"I like the way she carries herself and expresses herself," said Marlene Bowers, a Rock Rapids retiree who plans to caucus for Bachmann. "She doesn't beat around the bush."

Bachmann prides herself on that reputation, but not everyone seemed enamored with her conservative viewpoints about gay rights, same-sex marriage and other issues.

"All you're doing is teaching people to hate," said Brad Reynolds, a Rock Rapids voter who confronted Bachmann during her stop there.

"No, I'm not," Bachmann said calmly.

"Thank you for giving me my piece," Reynolds said as he walked away.

"Like George Wallace standing in the way of civil rights, Michele Bachmann will be judged for campaigning on hatred," he said after. "She is preaching hatred of gays."

Kayani-Asif talk ?pricks? rift balloon

ISLAMABAD - Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani had a telephonic contact with President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday, reportedly to dispel the impression of clash between the institutions and discuss some crucial issues involving memo controversy, which is at the centre of political crisis gripping the country.
The phone call made by Gen Kayani to Zardari during his Friday?s meeting with Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani was confirmed by the PM himself Saturday night at a press conference also held to dismiss the notion of rift between the army and the government. Presidential Spokesman Farhatullah Babar also confirmed the phone talk, saying that Gen Kayani inquired about president?s health.
Sources in the Pakistan People?s Party informed that the Friday night meeting between the COAS and prime minister, wherein the president was also taken into loop, discussed the memo controversy and ostensibly the divergent viewpoint taken by the military leadership in their reply filed with the Supreme Court. During the course of discussion ?a lot many things had settled down considerably? and the impression of clash between the institutions was erased to a great extend.
Sources further said that during the conversation both President Zardari and Gen Kayani agreed that the national interest should be held supreme and it was in the fitness of things that all the institutions should work in unison to steer the country out of prevailing crisis-like situation when the very sovereignty and integrity of the state was at stake in the post-Nato attack scenario.
They said that army chief was trying to contact the president for the past day or so but could not reach him on phone. He finally connected to him during his meeting with PM Gilani when he rang him (Zardari) up and both of them had a brief but ?meaningful? chat and both the leaders were ?almost? on the same page that the national interest was supreme.
However, these party sources said they have no idea about the return plan of President Zardari, who they said was improving after his shifting from hospital to his Dubai residence. Even some of his close confederates confirmed to The Nation that his condition was almost normal.
Some of the sources in the party informed that president would likely stretch his stay to Dubai for another couple of weeks and the fourth anniversary of Ms Benazir Bhutto?s martyrdom at Nodero would be lead by party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. These sources further said that if President Zardari returns back before Dec 27, even then the function would be lead by Bilawal.
In the absence of any view from the army of Friday?s talk between the troika, the PPP government has to some extant succeeded in selling an all-is-well impression but political observers are of the view that nothing could be said with a fair degree of certainty about the substance and impact of the meeting. More than taking it as something of a breakthrough or reaching at some kind of deal between the two sides ? the government and the army ? they see it as an exercise to convey a message to the US and Nato that they won?t allow anyone to capitalise on their internal rift.
Some analysts also saw it an effort by the PPP to convey an impression that Zardari was not incapacitated and his health to good to dash opposition?s dream of dethroning him on health grounds. They say that today?s (Monday) hearing of memo case in the Supreme Court would help bring some clarity to the prevailing state of confusion.
Talking to a select group of media persons at Prime Minister?s House on Saturday evening, PM Gilani termed judiciary and army as pro-democracy, brushing aside the impression of any clash-like situation between the three institutions. He insisted that all the state institutions were on same page and nobody wanted to derail the incumbent political dispensation.
He emphatically said, ?Both the army and judiciary are pro-democracy and I am confident that they don?t want derailment of system, as it takes years to put the system back on track.? Gilani said there were no means of overnight change, as the change would only come through the elections and ?not through any care-taker or chair-taker?.
Responding to questions regarding the divergent viewpoint given by the Chief of Army Staff and ISI director general in their replies on memo case in the Supreme Court, the premier failed to give any satisfactory answer except saying that since they were working under the government ambit, their replies were routed through the Ministry of Defence and the Office of Attorney General as per the laid procedure and they were very much in the ambit of the constitution.
Gilani, however, insisted he sees no threat to system as all the institutions would continue functioning within their constitutional limits but stressed the need of more cohesion in the working of the state institutions to steer the country out of the prevailing crises. He told the journalists that during Friday?s conversation Gen Kayani and President Zardari expressed their resolve that institutions would function within their constitutionally defined parameters.
About the government?s point of view on the Supreme Court?s jurisdiction in the memo case, Gilani said it was a legal matter, which has to be resolved in the court. To a question about Mansoor Ijaz, the prime minister remarked that since he (Ijaz) was a foreign national, the people should not be concerned about him and should only be concerned about the country?s security and sovereignty. He referred to the affidavit filed by the former US National Security Advisor Gen James Jones in the Supreme Court and said that ?after the letter of James Jones, this matter should now end?. To another question Gilani said that Husain Haqqani was staying in the PM House on the direction of President Zardari.
The prime minister stressed the need of national unity to tackle the challenges facing the country. He said that certain elements in the country wanted to bring change through some extra-constitutional means and made it loud and clear that they would not let anyone come from the backdoor. He said that government would complete its mandated constitutional term and elections would be held on time and those looking for some shortcut to the power would be disappointed. He said that in the past some people had established ?king?s party? but the move badly failed as with the flight of the ?king? the so-called party also evaporated in the air.
Gilani said that government would hold the next general elections in most transparent fashion under an independent Election Commission and made it clear that elections would be held on time and those dreaming about the flash polls would be disappointed. To another question he said that in next elections there would be a split mandate and government would be formed by two or more than two parties, and hoped that masses would elect leaders of good repute.
To a question he said that Pakistan wanted a strong and stable relations with the US based on mutual respect and on the basis of equality. To another question he said that country?s nukes were in safe hands and their command and control mechanism was impeccable and this fact was accepted by the world powers.

Psychology researcher finds that second-guessing one's decisions leads to unhappiness

ScienceDaily (Dec. 15, 2011) ? You're in search of a new coffee maker, and the simple quest becomes, well, an ordeal. After doing copious amounts of research and reading dozens of consumer reviews, you finally make a purchase, only to wonder: "Was this the right choice? Could I do better? What is the return policy?"

Reality check: Is this you?

If so, new research from Florida State University may shed some light on your inability to make a decision that you'll be happy with.

Joyce Ehrlinger, an assistant professor of psychology, has long been fascinated with individuals identified among psychologists as "maximizers." Maximizers tend to obsess over decisions -- big or small -- and then fret about their choices later. "Satisficers," on the other hand, tend to make a decision and then live with it.

Happily.

Of course, there are shades of gray. In fact, there's a whole continuum of ways people avoid commitment without really avoiding it.

Ehrlinger's latest research on decision making was published in the peer-reviewed journal Personality and Individual Differences. The paper was co-authored with her graduate student, doctoral candidate Erin Sparks, and colleague Richard Eibach, a psychology assistant professor at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. It examines whether "maximizers show less commitment to their choices than satisficers in a way that leaves them less satisfied with their choices."

The paper, based on two studies of Florida State undergraduate volunteers, finds that the maximizers' focus on finding the best option ultimately undermines their commitment to their final choices. As a result, the authors argue, "maximizers miss out on the psychological benefits of commitment," leaving them less satisfied than their more contented counterparts, the satisficers.

Past research into the differences between maximizers and satisficers looked at how the two groups made choices differently and, more importantly, how the process itself varied. Ehrlinger's research, however, looked at something else entirely: What happened after a choice was made?

"Because maximizers want to be certain they have made the right choice," the authors contend, "they are less likely to fully commit to a decision." And most likely, they are less happy in their everyday lives.

Whether being a maximizer is a central and stable part of the personality or simply a frame of mind remains unclear, but Ehrlinger hopes to isolate the cause of the behavior in future research.

"Current research is trying to understand whether they can change," she said. "High-level maximizers certainly cause themselves a lot of grief."

Over the years, Ehrlinger's scholarly research has led her to study self-perception and accuracy and error in self-judgment. Her latest research into the ways maximizers avoid commitment is important for several reasons.

First, the differences between maximizers and satisficers may play a bigger role than previously thought in consumer decision making and purchasing. For example: "Maximizers get nervous when they see an 'All Sales Are Final' sign because it forces them to commit," Ehrlinger said.

Also, a maximizer's lack of contentment creates a lot of stress, so the trait could potentially have an enormous effect on health, Ehrlinger explained. It's not just coffee-maker purchases they stress over -- and second-guess themselves about -- it's also the big life decisions such as choosing a mate, buying a house or applying for a job.

Even after considerable deliberation before choosing a mate or a house, a high-level maximizer may still feel unhappy, even depressed, with his or her final decision.

"Identifying the 'right' choice can be a never-ending task (for a maximizer)," Ehrlinger and her co-authors write. "Feelings about which option is best can always change in the face of new information. Maximizers might be unable to fully embrace a choice because they cannot be absolutely certain they chose the best possible option."

Lagarde: Global economy facing gloomy prospects (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The head of the International Monetary Fund sketched a dim outlook for the global economy and said all countries must work together to resolve Europe's escalating debt crisis.

IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said Europe's problems will not be solved by Europe alone.

"It's not a crisis that will be resolved by one group of countries taking action," Lagarde said in remarks at a State Department conference. "It's going to be hopefully resolved by all countries, all regions, all categories of countries actually taking action."

She said if the issues are not dealt with decisively, the global economy could confront the same threats that pushed the world into the Great Depression of the 1930s.

"It's a question of actually facing the issues, not being in denial, accepting the truth, accepting the reality, then dealing with it," Lagarde said.

She did not provide details on what actions she expected individual countries or the IMF to take.

She also cautioned financial markets to allow time for individual nations to work through the political process to arrive at a solution.

"It would be ideal and it would be lovely from a market perspective if it was not just currently but immediately signed, sealed and delivered, done deal, overnight," she said. "Unfortunately, for those of you who have the privilege of belonging to democracies, things do not happen in that way and things do take time and have to go through parliamentary processes."

Last week, a number of European countries said their central banks would make loans to the IMF to bolster IMF resources. After the announcement, the Obama administration said it would not provide more support to the IMF because it said the agency had sufficient resources.

BP just got its life back with more Gulf of Mexico oil leases

What, BP Worry? (U.S. Coast Guard)

The first deep-water oil lease sale in the Gulf of Mexico since a blow-out spewed at least 5 million barrels of crude has netted the U.S. Treasury $337.6 million. Included is $27.4 million for 11 leases from BP, the British energy conglomerate.

Although the blow-out occurred in a well owned by BP, the company did nothing wrong and there are no after-effects of any kind whatsoever to worry our pretty little heads about. It was all somebody else's fault anyway. And something like that could never ever ever happen again.

Because BP is careful now. And there is no reason to get nasty.

TDK ST700 High Fidelity On-Ear Headphones

After being absent from the consumer audio race for a while, earlier this year TDK unveiled one of 2011's most striking audio designs, the TDK 3 Speaker Boombox ($499.95, 3 stars), a massive homage to the boomboxes of the '80s. The problem was: It looked excellent, but didn't quite offer audio performance in line with its hefty price. So the recently released TDK ST700 High Fidelity On-Ear Headphones, at $149.99 (list), come as a pleasant surprise in terms of both price and performance. These on-ear, stylish headphones offer bright highs and plenty of bass response without overpowering the listener, and they lack distortion issues, even at high volumes. Alas, like the recent SOL Republic Tracks ($99.99, 4 stars), they have one glaring issue that'll be a dealbreaker for some: They become uncomfortable after a short period of time.

Design
The ST700 sports a simple design, with a black, matte-rubber surface covering the top of the adjustable headband and encircling the earcups. In the middle of the earcups, a metallic rotary piece with the TDK logo splashed across the center is reminiscent of old '70s and '80s hi-fi stereo knobs. A thick cable, also black, extends from each ear and terminates far shorter than most headphone cables do?but this is because it connects to an included 30-inch extension cable. The cable is quite stiff, which makes it harder to tangle up into a knotted mess (a positive) but also makes it less easy to manipulate. No matter how you shift the cable when plugged into a sound source, it will likely shift back into its original position within seconds (an annoyance). A ?-inch headphone jack adapter and plush, black cloth carrying pouch are also included. The ST70's earcups easily fold down flat to fit inside the pouch.

Unfortunately, there's no getting around the aforementioned fact that the ST700 puts a lot of pressure on the top of the head, under the headband, and on the ears?especially for those of us who wear glasses. With or without glasses, however, the pressure amounts to some noticeable discomfort after minimal use, and I-need-to-remove-these-from-my-head-level discomfort during longer listening sessions. Another caveat: The circumaural (on-ear) design of the ST700 leaks audio at moderate-to-high volumes. Such is the nature of a non-sealed pair, so beware if you plan on blasting these loudly at work.

If you're looking for an iPhone or mobile device headphone pair with built-in controls for call-answering and track navigation, you'll want to look else where. In this price range, the Klipsch Image ONE ($149.99, 4 stars) on-ear headphones are a great place to start, and if you can handle earphones rather than headphones, check out the Bowers & Wilkins C5 In-Ear Headphones ($179.95, 4.5 stars), a recent Editors' Choice. TDK_ST700_High_Fidelity_On-Ear_Headphones_inline

Performance
At maximum volume on an iPhone or laptop, the ST700 does not distort, even on deep bass tracks like the Knife's "Silent Shout" and Thom Yorke's "Cymbal Rush." There's no guarantee, however, that at high volumes from a more powerful home stereo amplifier, the ST700 won't begin to distort. Regardless, at reasonable (and higher-than-reasonable) listening levels, the ST700 stays clean and delivers laudable response over the deep bass frequencies. Laudable, however, doesn't mean powerful. For bass fiends looking for booming low-end, the ST700 is a bit more subtle and refined than a serious thumping pair of headphones like the SOL Republic Tracks.

Subtle and refined bass is a good thing, however. Coupled with the crystal clear high frequency response from the ST700's 40mm drivers, the overall audio performance is articulate and vibrant?bright without sacrificing the lows. This is especially apparent on instrumental tracks like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances." The lower-register stringed instruments pulse throughout the piece with a soft resonance and the deeper percussion hits convey the size of the drums and the room dramatically?but never by overpowering the brightness of higher-register orchestral instruments. The headphones provide a bit more low-end push than a flat response pair, but nothing so intense that purists will be appalled or bass fiends will be satisfied. Those of you right in the middle will be perfectly pleased.

This is a crowded field, however. The on-ear headphone market has many recent strong entries, with the budget SOL Republic Tracks and the Klipsch Image ONE standing out for different reasons. The Tracks manage to bring a powerful bass response?far more intense than the ST700's?to the budget realm, at a full $50 less. Unfortunately, both the Tracks and the ST700 are uncomfortable after long sessions. Meanwhile, Klipsch's comfortable Image ONE, while identically priced, offers slightly brighter highs and slightly deeper bass, distortion-free performance, and also comes with built-in iPhone controls. Ultimately, TDK's ST700 High Fidelity On-Ear Headphones sound great, so they get a high rating, but the lack of comfort is hard to get past.

Another Earth? NASA confirms first planet that could support life, liquid water (Yahoo! News)

RQ-170 (File Photo, via Aviation Weekly)

A day after the Pentagon acknowledged that an unmanned American reconnaissance drone went missing while on an operation in western Afghanistan late last week, Defense officials still smarting from the incident have come forward to dismiss Iranian claims that the drone was brought down by hostile activity. And American cyber experts similarly expressed skepticism over Iranian contentions that hackers based in Iran brought down the drone by penetrating its software or jamming its signals.

"The one thing I can tell you is we don't have any indications that the UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle], that we know we no longer have, was brought down by hostile activity of any kind," Pentagon spokesman Capt. John Kirby told reporters at a Pentagon press briefing Monday otherwise short of many further details on the embarrassing incident, ABC News's Luis Martinez reported. "As it says in the statement, the controllers lost control and, without getting into specific details, I think we're comfortable stating that there's no indication of hostile activity."

Likewise, the reported contention made by some Iranian military officials that an Iranian cyber-warfare unit commandeered the drone strains credulity, cyber-security expert James Lewis said.

"Iran hacking into the drone is as likely as an Ayatollah standing on a mountain-top and using thought waves to bring it down," Lewis, a former Reagan administration official now with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told Yahoo News by email Monday. "The most likely explanation is that it crashed on its own."

"If you could hack into a drone, you wouldn't use it for some spontaneous fun, you'd save it for a rainy day," Lewis continued. "You'd need to be able to hack either the control network in the U.S. or a satellite.? Neither is easy, and both are probably not something the Iranians can do."Read More ?

Can the GOP Become the Party of the Working Mom?

There are two main sets of characters in Michele Bachmann?s new memoir, Core of Conviction. On one hand, there are ?the big-city liberal mayors, the Saul Alinsky nostalgists, the ACORN activists, the taxpayer-subsidy-dependent green-jobs propagandists, and all the other moochers, hustlers, and rent seekers demanding a ?place at the table? when liberals control the White House.? Pitted against these villains are Bachmann?s heroines, America?s last best hope: flinty working women. One of Bachmann?s grandmothers worked in a meatpacking factory, raised seven children, and still changed her own snow tires at the age of 83. When Bachmann?s parents divorced, her mother had to go back to work, ?and work hard. We qualified for welfare, but Mom wouldn?t think of it.? As a teenager, Bachmann baby-sat and worked ??at a grocery store to save for college. One summer she cleaned fish and tarred roofs in Alaska, before going on to practice tax law and raise five biological children and numerous foster kids on a frugal regimen of Bible study and Goodwill shopping trips.
