Amazon faces strike threat in Germany over pay, conditions

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Global internet retailer Amazon.com could be facing its first strike in Germany by warehouse workers seeking better pay and benefits.

Amazon employs around 9,000 people across Germany and has come under fire from trade union Verdi for refusing to implement a collective agreement on employment conditions, in keeping with the country's other mail order and retail firms.

The union is also pressing for higher basic pay and bigger supplements for night shifts.

Amazon workers in the eastern city of Leipzig voted in favor of strike action earlier this month and staff at Bad Hersfeld, a town in central Germany where 3,700 are employed, joined them on Monday.

Verdi said almost 98 percent of those taking part in the ballot at Bad Hersfeld voted in favor of strike action.

"Amazon's management should ... finally start talks on a collective agreement," the union's negotiator Bernhard Schiederig said.

A strike, which would delay deliveries to customers, could come within weeks, Schiederig told Reuters, although no date has been set.

Schiederig also told Reuters he thought a site visit by Peer Steinbrueck, the opposition Social Democrat candidate for chancellor, to Bad Hersfeld on Monday, where he met Amazon Germany boss Ralf Kleber and labour representatives, had gone well.

But he said management had again refused to enter negotiations on a collective agreement, though said they were happy to hold further talks with Verdi.

In Leipzig, the union is calling for starting pay of 10.66 euros ($13.89) an hour, compared with 9.30 euros now. In Bad Hersfeld, they want pay of 9.83 euro to be increased to 12.18.

Amazon Germany was not immediately available for comment on Monday. It has previously said that it pays wages that are competitive.

The online retailer hit headlines in Germany in February after it employed security staff from a company linked to a neo-Nazi group who were bullying its employees.

Amazon has since terminated the contract, saying it regretted the events.

Britons jailed in drug case amid abuse claims

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? A Dubai court has sentenced three British tourists to four years in prison on drug charges in a case that drew international scrutiny over claims of abuses in custody.

The allegations of torture brought a statement of concern from British Prime Minister David Cameron, but Dubai authorities have denied any wrongdoing.

The trio, identified as Suneet Jeerh, Grant Cameron and Karl Williams, were arrested last July with what police said was the synthetic drug known as Spice. The men deny the charges. They claimed they faced abuse by police, including electric shocks and beatings.

Monday's conviction and sentence can be appealed within 15 days. The court also ordered the men deported after they complete their sentences.

Code Alert: Tynker Wants to Teach Your Child to Tinker With Tech ...

Krishna Vedati doesn?t want your children to just watch Saturday morning cartoons. He wants them to make their own.

Vedati is the CEO of Tynker, a ?learn to code? platform for kids in third through eighth grade, one of many that have popped up in recent years aimed at parents who think computing skills are critical for their children.

But rather than focus on computer languages like HTML, the Mountain View-based startup teaches kids how to think like a programmer, he said.

?The way I think about programming is just like any other language the kids are learning today,? Vedati said. ?This is just like another language, just a different set of life skills than if you learned French or Spanish.?

Consumer might want what Vedati?s offering, after results from a pilot of Tynker in Bay Area schools over the past year. The startup, which has raised $3.5 million in angel funding, was inundated with 10,000 new requests after openin up to educators nationwide earlier this month, the majority from parents eager to get their hands on a home version of the coding platform.

Vedati estimates that a home-based edition should be ready in the next couple months. However, for now, Tynker is only available to schools. The platform is free for educators, with an option to pay and upgrade to premium.

Vedati?s own son went to a coding camp at Stanford University and, two weeks later, was able to build a Flash player game. Still, Vedati noticed that he had merely learned how to regurgitate the pre-scripted instructions for building the game, without any understanding of programming?s fundamentals.

It got Vedati thinking. How could he and the rest of the Tynker team design a platform that could convey the conceptual logic behind programming to kids in a structured and, more importantly, fun manner? It was the ideal project for Vedati, an engineer turned entrepreneur. He has been coding since his university years in India where his love of video games drew him to field.

?[Kids are] exposed to so much technology,? he said. ?But school hasn?t changed in 50 years, so we thought these kids need a different set of skills for their generation to use the technology to their advantage.?

With Tynker, kids are introduced to coding through a simple, visual platform that allows its young users to create games and basic animations with nary a line of code in sight. Its drag and drop design is similar to Scratch, another kid-friendly coding language conceived at MIT. One of Tynker?s simplest concepts is animating a character and teaching it how to walk and talk.

?By the time they?re done training the character, they?ve probably learned 20 primitives,? said Vedati. ?Once they get the knowledge of 20 primitives, then they?re asking what else can I do??

In general, Vedati says girls focus on storytelling and characters, while boys gravitate towards designing games. And, in general, the coding projects grow more complex as the children get older. Whereas third graders are happy to make anything they can show their parents, eighth graders want to build multi-level games.

Later down the line, Vedati said he aims to extend Tynker?s reach to high schoolers in a manner that would transition students to a regular programming language, such as JavaScript or Python and he hopes Tynker will help fix the lack of coding courses at schools nationwide.

?Programming is very near and dear to me,? Vedati said. ?I firmly believe that it?s a life skill that anyone can learn and they could put it to use no matter what their interests are whether their interests are history, art ? there?s computation going on in every field.?

Paul Krugman Responds To Critics: 'Maybe I Actually Am Right'

Paul Krugman?s got it right when it comes to the economic crisis, says Paul Krugman.

The Nobel Prize-winning economist and New York Times columnist responded in a blog post Sunday to his countless critics who claim he?s choosing specific facts and ignoring others to make his case that budget-tightening policies are hurting economies around the world.

His comments come as debate rages in Washington and in Europe over whether slashing spending -- which has led to high unemployment and slowed immediate economic growth in some places -- is the best way to boost economies in the long term.

?Maybe I actually am right, and maybe the other side actually does contain a remarkable number of knaves and fools,? Krugman wrote in the post Sunday.

Krugman faces a chorus of detractors on a regular basis. The latest criticism came from Ken Langone, the CEO of investment bank Invemed Associates and co-founder of Home Depot, who argued on Bloomberg TV that Krugman?s push against focusing on closing the deficit is at odds with the realities businesses face.

Langone joins the company of the Prime Minister of Latvia, conservative Harvard historian Niall Ferguson and an entire website with the URL krugmaniswrong.com in accusing Krugman of having his facts mixed up on deficit reduction and economic growth.

For his part, the left-leaning Krugman has called deficit hawks ?remarkably foolish,? and he?s gotten the chance to double down on his criticism in the wake of revelations that one famed pro-austerity study is riddled with errors. Krugman wrote earlier this month that austerity advocates seized on the now-disgraced findings of Ken Rogoff and Carmen Reinhart because they were finding ?excuses for inflicting pain.?

?The point is not that I have an uncanny ability to be right; it?s that the other guys have an intense desire to be wrong,? Krugman wrote in his Sunday blog post. ?And they?ve achieved their goal.?

Form(s) vs Function: Making Official Docs Look Better--And Work Harder

A crop of newly reimagined government forms beautify and clarify the documents that define us (as far as the government is concerned, at least). But should we be thinking harder about how these forms function, alongside how they look?

Earlier this month, a London design agency called I Want Design introduced a new concept for the birth certificate at the behest of Icon Magazine. The purpose? To imagine government forms as ?living documents? that remain interesting long after the paper certificate is locked away in a safety deposit box. The revamped certificate is a beauty, full of extras like the baby?s name etymology and star sign, which is goofy and fun.

The certificate also comes with a dynamic digital version, readily accessible across devices. ?We agreed on a traditional hard copy, but one that paints a bigger picture of a person and when they were born,? the studio tells Icon. ?This could be accompanied by a dynamic digital file that could expand on this content.? It's amazing we've yet to see birth certificates go digital?it likely has something to do with security issues. This concept wouldn't change much about how the hard copy functions (that'll always be controlled by the government), but it's nice to imagine a digital version that functions almost like a birth announcement.

Then, last week, another theoretical redesign made its way across the Internet, just as most of us were wondering where our tax returns are. FormNation LLC, a New York-based design studio, unveiled a lovely little concept for a new breed of IRS forms, including the 1040 to the W9. The new forms use color to pull out the essential information, while the details fade into smaller type at the bottom of the page.

?The current US tax forms, and most forms we encounter at a government level like banks, have a severe lack of visual navigation,? Jan Habraken, the founder of the studio, told me over email. ?The specific design changes we propose aim to lead the eye through the form. Our redesign is the first of what we hope will be many redesigns [where] we can show how design can improve those everyday activities and make the problems less painful.? The IRS updates its forms from time to time, but rarely to change something aesthetic. The truth is, most of us rarely read our tax forms directly, except to look them over after an accountant or a tax prep company has done the dirty work. Would these friendlier versions spur more of us to do our own taxes? It's hard to say. Habraken, for his part, is hoping to meet with the IRS to discuss possible implementation.

It?s wonderful that designers are focusing in on large-scale problems that affect entire populations. At the same time, it?d be interesting to see them take on more complex problems surrounding bureaucracy itself. Personally, I?m not sure how I?d go about accessing my birth certificate, or even my tax forms, from the federal or state government. It?d probably involve a lot of uninformed Googling. In hand, the forms are clear enough?but getting ahold of them? Not so much.

One example of a theoretical redesign that rethinks both aesthetics and the functionality? The Health Design Challenge, a recent competition to redesign the Electronic Medical Record (the digital file that documents your doctor?s visits and conditions). The winning designs all focus on improving how patients understand and leverage their EMRs. Take the one below, for example: patients and their adult children can use it to schedule medication dosages and predict drug interactions. Three of the winning designs are now being developed into a single concept, which will be tested by millions of patients at Veterans? Affairs hospitals.

Fortunately, there are some big brains that have already made significant progress in using razor-sharp design to cut through bureaucratic red tape. Just a few weeks ago, London?s Design Museum made an interesting choice when they crowned a simple government website Design of the Year 2013. Their reasoning? The straightforward, aesthetically unassuming site collected every necessary government form in one place. It may not have looked ?design-y,? but it was a remarkable piece of design.

In the same sense, it'd be great to see a designer take on a theoretical redesign of the online infrastructure for accessing government documents like birth certificates and tax records. There?s definitely no harm in rethinking the clarity of the documents, but it?s also worth asking: is it the form that?s broken, or the function?

Roadside bomb kills 3 policemen in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A remote-controlled roadside bomb killed three police officers in eastern Afghanistan on Sunday, an attack the Taliban claimed as the opening round of their spring offensive.

The bomb exploded in Ghazni province beneath a police convoy that was traveling to the district of Zana Khan to take part in a military operation against insurgents, Mohammad Ali Ahmadi, the province's deputy governor, told The Associated Press.

He said the blast destroyed the vehicle carrying Col. Mohammad Hussain, the deputy provincial police chief, killing him and two other officers. Ahmadi said two officers also were wounded in the insurgent operation, adding that it clearly targeted Hussain.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility in an email sent to the media.

He called the bombing the first attack in the spring offensive that Taliban's leadership said it was starting Sunday. This year's offensive is named after Khalid ibn al-Walid, a companion of Islam's Prophet Muhammad who became a legendary Muslim military commander known as the "Drawn Sword of God." The insurgents said their forces planned to infiltrate enemy ranks to conduct so-called insider attacks and target military and diplomatic sites with suicide bombers.

Insurgents have escalated attacks recently in a bid to gain power and influence ahead of next year's presidential election and the planned withdrawal of most U.S. and other foreign combat troops by the end of 2014. U.S.-backed efforts to try to reconcile the Islamic militant movement with the Afghan government are gaining little traction.

April already has been the deadliest month this year for attacks across the country, where Afghan security forces are increasingly taking the lead on the battlefield in the war that has lasted more than 11 years.

On Saturday, a NATO plane crashed in southern Afghanistan, killing four international troops. The alliance said initial reports indicated no enemy activity in the area where the plane went down. Coalition personnel secured the site and were investigating the cause of the crash. NATO didn't identify the province where the crash occurred, but Mohammad Jan Rasoulyar, deputy governor of the southern province of Zabul, said an aircraft belonging to foreign forces crashed there on Saturday afternoon.

NATO declined on Sunday to provide any more information about the crash, including the type of aircraft involved, as the investigation continues.

Also on Sunday, the U.S.-led international military coalition said Afghan and foreign forces arrested six insurgents on Saturday ? three in Helmand province, one in Baghlan province and two in Kandahar province. The report said the two taken into custody in Kandahar city included a local Taliban leader who allegedly had coordinated assassinations, sniper ambushes and other attacks there against coalition and Afghan forces.

There are about 100,000 international troops in Afghanistan, including 66,000 Americans. A top priority of the U.S. force, which is slated to drop to about 32,000 by February 2014, is boosting the strength and confidence of Afghan forces.

Ten dead, dozens hurt during Mexican prison riot

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Ten people were killed and dozens wounded in a prison riot early Saturday in the central state of San Luis Potosi, local officials said.

State police said they had re-established control in an cell block of La Pila prison in the state capital of San Luis Potosi after a fight broke out between prisoners, according to a posting on the security ministry's official social media page.

Authorities were investigating the cause of the riot and it was unclear if inmates belonged to rival drug gangs, whose battles have sparked violence across Mexico.

Deadly riots have repeatedly rocked the country's overcrowded prisons, which house inmates from different drug gangs that have been fighting over trafficking routes and local turf.

Killings linked to organized crime fell 14 percent to 4,249 in the first four months of the presidency of Enrique Pena Nieto, who took over in December and vowed to reduce the violence that has marred Latin America's second biggest economy.

Former president Felipe Calderon sent the military out to fight drug cartels during his 2006-2012 term, when nearly 70,000 people died in battles and executions, and up to another 27,000 are missing, according to official data.

Chevron resumes operations in unit closed by fire

RICHMOND, Calif. (AP) -- Chevron has resumed operations in a unit at its Bay Area refinery that was shut down after a massive fire last year.

Company officials said during a conference call with analysts Friday that crews had begun feeding crude oil through the unit knocked out by the Aug. 6 fire.

Chevron's chief financial officer, Patricia Yarrington, says the unit at Richmond is expected to be fully operational during the second quarter.

Both Chevron and government investigations have determined that corrosion in a pipe caused a leak that sparked the fire, sending a plume of black smoke over nearby areas.

Since the fire, the refinery had been operating at about 60 percent capacity until very recently. The factory wasn't processing crude oil and instead was being used to blend gasoline.

Exclusive: Imam of Mosque Visited by Bombing Suspect Speaks to TIME

The old imam cringes at the sound of that name?Tamerlan Tsarnaev?furrowing his brow into a bed of creases as he sighs and looks away. There is about half an hour left until the next call to Friday prayers, and he is seated in the third-floor office of his mosque in the city of Makhachkala in southern Russia. At last he indulges the question: ?None of our men, not a single person, has ever known him or ever seen him.?

It is a mantra that Imam Khasan-Khadzhi Gasanaliev has had to repeat for journalists many times this week, ever since it emerged that Tsarnaev, the suspected bomber of the Boston Marathon, had attended services at the mosque on Kotrova Street. The mosque upholds a more fundamentalist version of Islam than others in the region of Dagestan, and it has been known as a place of worship for suspected terrorists in Russia. On Thursday, Tsarnaev?s father Anzor admitted that his son had gone there for services during a six-month visit he made to Dagestan last year. ?He went with me,? the elder Tsarnaev told a press conference on Thursday in Makhachkala. ?We went wherever there was space. There was not always space on Kotrova. It?s small.? He added: ?But he had no friends there. You don?t make friends that fast around here.?

Investigators have not revealed any links between Tsarnaev and any Islamist groups, nor have they explained his alleged motives. But his acquaintances and members of his family have said that he became an adherent of fundamentalist Islam in the years before the bombings. The other suspect in the Boston attacks, Tsarnaev?s younger brother Dzhokhar, told investigators from his hospital bed this week that he and his brother were motivated by the American wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to a report in the Washington Post that cited U.S. officials familiar with the investigation.

The officials told the Post that the Tsarnaev brothers were ?self-radicalized,? meaning that their views were shaped by what they saw online and knew of U.S. actions in the Muslim world. But judging by the opinion of the United States that Gasanaliev expressed to TIME, Tamerlan?s alleged politics would at least have been reinforced by the views upheld at the mosque on Kotrova Street.

?America will soon collapse. It will disappear,? Gasanaliev said matter-of-factly after sitting down with TIME for an exclusive interview. ?How many years did the Arabic caliphate rule? For hundreds of years the world was ruled by the Arabic caliphate. And it was a wonderful ruler. Now America is the great power. But tomorrow it will fall apart, a few more hurricanes, a few more of something else.? Pausing for a moment, he switches to a different tone: ?But today, we must all look each other in the eyes honestly, wish each other well, respect each other and love each other. There should be no violence.?

Last week?s violence in Boston confuses him not because it was indiscriminate, but because it has caused such an uproar, bringing a pack of journalists to Dagestan with questions for him and his mosque. ?Somebody from somewhere was killed, or something was fabricated, and so much noise because of this,? he says with bewilderment. ?How much has America done in Vietnam, in all its wars everywhere. Right now it is turning the entire Arab world upside down. They kill hundreds, thousands, millions of people and nobody is interested. But over there someone does something, blows something up, someone is killed, and because of this they send so many people [journalists] here. They are surprised by this.?

He is adamant that his mosque, a bastion of conservative Salafi Islam in Dagestan, had nothing to do with Tsarnaev?s turn to radicalism or with the Boston bombings. ?There is no politics here,? he says. ?Our sermons are clean.? And indeed, the sermon he gave at Friday prayers this week avoided politics completely, focusing on the need for piety, for all Muslims to stay on the ?straight path? set out by Allah. ?Do not fear, and do not despair, but rejoice in the paradise that has been promised to you,? he proclaimed to the congregation of men, whose numbers packed the mosque and spilled out into the courtyard. Even amid the steel bars and bricks being used for the mosque?s reconstruction, they laid down prayer rugs and took in the sermon, the vast majority between the ages of 20 and 30.

Few of them would speak openly to a reporter afterward, but some of those who did said they appreciated the mosque on Kotrova Street for not shying from political and social issues. ?He tells it straight,? a worshiper named Magomedgadzhi said of the imam, declining to give his surname. ?He can criticize the people in power if they deserve it. You don?t really hear that anywhere else.?

The Salafi movement?s confrontations with the state are well known throughout this region of Russia. The movement acts as an alternative to the more mainstream Sufi mosques, which are sanctioned and supported by the state. ?They have not given a single kopek to help our mosque,? Gasanaliev says of the Sufis and their friends in government. ?They accuse us of being Wahhabists,? he says, referring to an ultra-conservative brand of Sunni Islam that is synonymous in Russia with terrorism.

Although he does try to dislodge that reputation and cooperate with the authorities? Gasanaliev is deputy mufti of Dagestan, a role that grants him some clout with regional authorities ? his mosque is watched by the security services with a magnifying glass. Two sources close to the local branch of the FSB, Russia?s version of the FBI, told TIME on Monday that associating with the Salafi movement is enough to get on a counter-terrorism watch list in Russia. That was the case with Tsarnaev during his time in Dagestan, where he was flagged by the FSB as a potential extremist, the sources said.

In some ways, the scrutiny is not surprising. Congregants at the mosque on Kotrova Street have often been killed in shootouts with Russia?s counter-terrorism forces, and the Salafi bookstore across the street offers literature that has been blacklisted by the state. Tucked in among copies of the Koran and video lectures on such topics as courtship and divorce, there are the tracts of Hizb-ut-Tahrir, a pan-Islamic political party that operates freely in the West but is banned in Russia as an extremist organization, as well as in other former Soviet republics in Central Asia.

Asked the reason for the state?s attention to his mosque, Gasanaliev smiles and waves his hands dismissively. ?They are making elephants from flies,? he says. What matters to him is that his mosque is open to all comers, whatever their views or denominations. ?We have no politics here,? he says. ?Our law is sharia. You come here to pray and you leave. Anyone can come here. Nobody will ask you who you are. That is part of sharia.? And what his congregants do from there is none of his responsibility.

Working round-the-clock, rescuers have pulled more than two dozen survivors from the rubble of a Bangladesh garment factory that collapsed 4 days ago, killing some 350 people.

From within the wreckage, "We are still getting response from survivors though they are becoming weaker slowly," said Brig. Gen. Ali Ahmed Khan, the head of the fire services.

"The building is very vulnerable. Any time the floors could collapse. We are performing an impossible task, but we are glad that we are able to rescue so many survivors," he said.

The disaster is the worst ever for the country's booming and powerful garment industry, surpassing a fire five months ago that killed 112 and brought widespread pledges to improve worker-safety standards.

Egyptian Activists: Our Religion Is None Of Your Business

Since Egypt's revolution began, tensions among Egypt's Muslims and Christians have only increased. Earlier this month, it once again turned deadly. Tit-for-tat killings left three Muslims and at least six Christians dead.

That and other religious violence is prompting a public debate about religious identity in Egypt. One group of young Egyptians wants to remove religious labels from national ID cards.

'Where The Trouble Starts'

Aalam Wassef, one of those advocates, will gladly tell you he's a video artist, a musician and a publisher. When it comes to his religion, though, he says it's none of your business.

That's the motto of his new campaign, too. Wassef, along with two other Egyptians, is calling on others to cover up their religion on their national ID card and start identifying as human first. They're spreading the word on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

One of their videos plays images of a particularly bloody day for Christians last year, when the military in power at the time drove over Christian protesters, and state television called on "honorable" Muslims to come out and defend the troops from the Christians. Twenty-seven people were dead by the end of that day.

The lyrics sung to these images are just as chilling: "The racist republic of Egypt, the sectarian republic of Egypt. It's ingrained on your ID, and this is where the trouble starts."

"Egypt has a long history of sectarian violence and sectarian issues, which have always been covered up with this narrative of national unity," Wassef says. "And so it's a big lie, actually, because there's a lot of embedded discrimination in the society."

Institutionalized Differences

For decades in Egypt, Christians haven't had the same access to education and job opportunities. They are about 10 percent of Egypt's population and predominantly Coptic. They can't build churches without a presidential permit, and some Islamists have blamed them publicly for stirring violent protests against Islamist President Mohammed Morsi. A fiery ultra-orthodox preacher who supports the Muslim Brotherhood said this about Christians:

"I tell the church, yes, you are our brothers in this nation. But there are red lines. Our red line is the legitimacy of Dr. Morsi. Whoever sprays it with water, we will spray them with blood."

The preacher's name is Safwat Hegazy, and he sits on Egypt's National Council for Human Rights.

Michael Wahid Hanna, an Egypt expert at The Century Foundation in New York, says he's seen an increase in religious-based violence.

"I think what's different is that, we have officials of the government now not underground preachers, not opposition members, but formal members of the government who engage in sectarian rhetoric," he says. "And we've seen no effort or real response to rein that in."

The lack of response, Hanna says, creates a permissive atmosphere where religious discrimination can thrive.

President Morsi has distanced himself from language like Hegazy's. He's issued permits for two new churches, and during religious violence earlier this month, he called the top Coptic Christian leader and said that he takes attacks on the church personally.

A 'More Useful' Distinction

As quickly as the religious violence breaks out, it is swept away.

Earlier this month, clashes began in the village of Khosous, just outside Cairo, after young boys painted a swastika on a Muslim institute. In the melee, a Christian man shot a Muslim man, witnesses said. After that death, five Christians were killed in apparent retaliation. Another Muslim man later died of his wounds.

But now it is quiet again. A black banner hangs above the entrance to the city. It reads, "Christians and Muslims are one hand."

Yet it's evident that religious tensions lie just under the surface. One ultra-orthodox Muslim lawyer who insisted the incident was not a religious conflict went on to describe "pig-rearing Christian thugs." In return, local Christians blame Muslims and often use language that's just as inflammatory.

Bolbol Khalil, a Christian juice shop owner on the street where the violence was the worst, says Muslims came from outside Khosous and attacked Christians.

He points to a nearby building. Merzam was killed there, he says. Victor, a taxi driver, was killed there, too, and a man named Peter was soaked in gasoline and set on fire because he was Christian.

We never expected this here, he says. We celebrate weddings together, we mourn at funerals together. We are all brothers.

Back in Cairo, Wassef pulls out his ID. In the space for religion, he's covered it with a piece of paper that has his blood type written on it.

"It is good to remind everyone that whatever your religion, whatever your origin, the color of your blood is just red like anyone else," he says. "And it's actually much more useful, especially in the context that we live in, to have your blood type written on your ID."

>> reporter: but the fact she can celebrate at all is extraordinary considering how seriously she and her mother se celeste were injured two weeks ago. the family had gathered at the boston marathon to cheer on celeste 's sister carmen. her brother tyler decided to stay home at the last minute. they were at the finish line when the bomb went off. these powerful images show sydney being helped by strangers, and celeste lying in the carnage. her husband kevin struggling to stop her bleeding.

>> instinct just takes over. you take your belt off, put a tourniquet on.

>> last week kevin and carmen sat down to tell us about that awful day.

>> i just laid down next to her and just told her i loved her and that everything would be okay and i just kissed her face and just gently carsed her as people were trying to get to her.

>> they were at the finish line waiting for me and i was terrified that my family was gone. everyone i loved was there.

>> they have been recovering together, literally in the same room at boston medical center . sydney suffered a severed femoral artery and celeste lost both of her legs. this week, they were strong enough to speak to us themselves. despite being so close to the blast, they never lost consciousness and remember every detail.

>> celeste , what about your memory of that very moment?

>> it was just -- it was just crazy. i knew that my sister was coming around soon. and i was -- i just kept scanning back and forth to see if i could see her.

>> reporter: but then --

>> when the bomb hit, i -- i just couldn't -- i immediately -- i think i was just down on the ground because of course it hit my legs. i just kept saying over and over in my head, no, no. so my husband was standing next to me. i had no idea if sydney was hurt or anything. i was just down and then his face was over my face and he was just like i've got you. you are hurt. i'm going to take care of you. and he saved my life.

>> reporter: the pain, she says, was excruciating.

>> i just wanted to die. you know what, actually the thought was there because i was in so much pain and then i just remember thinking, i can't. i can't. i don't want to leave my family, you know. just too much to do.

>> reporter: celeste had no idea her daughter sydney was also badly injured bleeding heavily from a severe leg wound. sydney hoarse from being intubated from surgery describes that day.

>> it was really difficult that day being so tired because all of the blood leaving my body. i turned white. my lips turned blue. i felt tingly like i was fading.

>> reporter: did you know at the time you were in that severe of a situation?

>> no. i mean at the moment we were pushed back i was in shock and i wasn't sure what happened. when i was in the ambulance, i think it completely dawned on me like i could be dying.

>> reporter: separated from her parents, sydney feared the worst.

>> i wanted to know where they were. i thought i was going to wake up and have no one left but my brother.

>> reporter: in the hospital that night sydney learned her mother had lived but she suffered a devastating injury.

>> i knew i at least had my mother. so really the legs don't mean anything to me. i know it's hard for her, but i'm glad i have her.

>> that's true. i mean i liked my legs but, you know, if i can get a new set of legs and still be here and go through the milestones, her graduation. i have an older son and so close to. i want to see everything in their lives. i'm not ready to leave. so, yeah. if it is with new legs, it's with new legs.

>> reporter: it's the second time a medical disaster has hit the corcoran 's three years ago sydney was hit by a car and spent a week in the hospital with a fractured skull. her brother tyler saw it all happened.

>> he thought she was dead that time. so for him to live through this, i feel like emotionally this has to be -- he is so strong. you know, we have all been through so much.

>> it was just horrible. i just didn't want to go through losing her again.

>> reporter: but this family is not just boston strong, they are corcoran strong.

>> we're all here. we're all alive. i got my baby with me. you know, i couldn't ask for more.

>> reporter: not that their resilience won't be tested. a few days ago celeste hit a low point until this visit from some wounded veterans.

>> i can't do anything.

>> right now, yes. but i'm telling you, with all of my heart, you are going to be more independent than you ever were.

>> reporter: gabriel martinez lost his legs in 2010 .

>> doesn't matter. this is a just a change of scenery.

>> what did they tell you to lift your spirits?

>> he came in here with his legs and i was amazed. he goes rock climbing . nothing he can't do. if you have the spirit and you want to do it i can absolutely achieve it.

>> reporter: newfound friends are among the biggest comfort, especially from bonds forged that day. jeff was captured in this unforgettable scene. he helped the fbi identify one of the bombers. after he visited sydney on her birthday, jeff, celeste and sydney talked about doing rehab together. before rehab begins, it's the little things that can bring a smile or cause a panic.

>> i understand you even had a little visit from bradley cooper , is that right?

>> yes.

>> yes.

>> reporter: tell me about that. that had to be exciting.

>> it was very exciting. very exciting. her heart monitor -- it is a funny story.

>> reporter: your heart monitor got higher.

>> i was so stressed out because at that point i hadn't washed my hair. i still had the debris and shrapnel, whatever. literally my hair was matted. and like i said i do hair and i had my glasses on and i was under no illusion that he was going to walk in and be star struck by me but i wanted to look my best for me.

>> he asked for permission if he could kiss me on my cheek. of course i said yes. i'm never going to forget that moment. here's our hero.

>> reporter: the leading man of sydney 's story is matt smith . one of the strangers who helped to save her life.

>> what was he doing at the time to help you that allowed you to feel calm and feel like everything was going to be okay?

>> he made sure that i was holding his hand and he kept telling me to squeeze it, make sure i could still do it. and he was holding my gaze the entire time. getting right up in my face and he kept saying just look at me, bud.

>> reporter: people like you were real heros that day. there could have been more bombs for all you knew. did that enter your mind whatsoever?

>> no. the only thing, you know, that we wanted to make sure she was okay.

>> reporter: the corcoran 's have also found peace knowing police have tracked down the people they believe are responsible. when you there was a capture, were you happy to hear that? did it hit you in any way.

>> i felt a relief.

>> so did i. i wanted the person to be brought to jchlustice. i don't want e i didn't want them to hurt anyone else. i don't want hate in my heart for this person. i truly believe they are sick. they have my pity.

>> reporter: the family knows they face a tough road but they will make it together.

>> there's times when everything kind of overwhelms you. i really believe if you persevere and believe in yourself, you have to dig down deep inside and be like, i can do this. it's going to be hard but i can do this.

>> first of all, how wonderful they let you in to the family.

>> they really have is.

>> and you have been able to televise this conversation. tell us about prognosis. obviously they are already having their ups and downs and obviously from bradley cooper to veterans they have had help. what's the prognosis.

>> a lot of emotional support which they so much need right now. but sydney is expected to make a full recovery. you saw she has a leg wound and her doctors say she may even get back to her dance troupe that she loves so much at her high school . of course that is great news. celeste , what is next for her is the long road to recovery. once you are a double amputee she will have to be fit with prosthetics later on but she's very much looking forward to getting back to the life she had before as a hair dresser . although, of course, life has changed so much for them. their new reality.

>> for all of the wrong reasons. we have so much technology to help them in this. we will stay on the story. thank you for your reporting.
