Pure Grips expands golf grip line to appeal to all golfers -- including me

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Grips don't get equal time with shafts and clubheads. They just don't. They're like the offensive linemen who blocks for the back who breaks loose for a touchdown run.

But grips are crucial and they have never been better or more varied. We all have our grip preferences. I like full cord in my grips. I like that roughness, it feels like it's easier to keep strong contact with the club. Once you're a full-cords golfer, it's tough to give that up. But Pure Grips has an alternative that I'm going to check out.

I played in an outing last fall in Mesquite, Nev., and my driver grip had gotten so worn, it had a string of cord hanging off of it. It was time for a new grip but it was only a few minutes before the outing's shotgun start. A Pure Grips rep was there changing out grips. Pure Grips uses seamless molding and rubber technology to make easy-on, easy-off grips.

It is best known for its innovative installation process. There is no glue or tape involved. Instead, an air gun blows pressurized air through a small hole on the butt of the grip. The grip itself then lifts off the shaft and can be slid off. It takes a couple of seconds. It's the same process in reverse to install grips. Without the air pressure, the rubber grip reverts to normal size and grips to the shaft. So there's no glue, no drying, no waiting time.

The Pure Grips rep put a new grip on my driver in a matter of seconds. Since it is easily changeable, I decided to try a slightly bigger mid-size grip. He put it on, I went to the tee and I've been using it ever since. I'm now considering mid-size Pure Grips grips for my irons. The problem is, I hate to give up my full cords.

This week at the PGA Merchandise Show I discovered that the cords excuse is now out the window. Pure Grips's newest product, other than adding a putter grip to its lineup, is its version of a cord grip -- the DTX. The new grip is Pure Grips's first collaboration with famed golf instructor Hank Haney. The DTX grip is all rubber, of course, like all Pure Grips products. But this one has a unique combination of rough sections and tacky sections and the result is the same rugged feel as actual cord.

One other wrinkle is an expansion of color. The Pure Grips grips come in ten colors -- pretty much the whole rainbow, plus black and white. And you can now add graphics and lettering to your grip. You want a purple grip with the Pure logo outlined in yellow, you got it. You can check it all out at their website.

Look Out Groupon: eBay's Upping Its Game

Thursday, January 31st, 2013
By George Leong, B.Comm. for Profit Confidential

Look Out Groupon: eBay?s Upping Its GameIn just over two months, Groupon, Inc. (NASDAQ/GRPN) has more than doubled in value from its 52-week low of $2.60 on November 12, 2012. The company?s business model of providing daily deals on goods and services is interesting; but it?s not immune to the rising competition from rivals, since the barriers to entry are relatively low, based on my stock analysis. Unfortunately, my stock analysis suggests that Groupon was an early entrant in its business market, but numerous companies are now surfacing, pushing Groupon to defend itself and try to offer an advantage for the user. (Read ?Playing Groupon is Akin to Betting.?) I know that in my case I have made numerous purchases on Groupon (including a great deal on a hotel in Florida), but I?m now seeing amazing deals popping up on other web sites.

Groupon?s stock chart below shows a possible upside break at the $5.50 resistance line, marked by a bullish ascending triangle, based on my technical analysis.

Groupon Inc Chart

Chart courtesy of www.StockCharts.com

My stock analysis indicates that Groupon doesn?t only face competition from the likes of Yelp, Inc. (NYSE/YELP). Google Inc. (NASDAQ/GOOG), and Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ/AMZN); it now faces competition from eBay Inc. (NASDAQ/EBAY), which launched a similar daily deal site called ?Lifestyle Deals? that offers heavy discounts on different products and services. My stock analysis notes that this move by eBay is a trial run to test the acceptance of users, and it will focus on areas in California and Washington, DC. My stock analysis suggests that eBay, with its more than 200 million users worldwide, is looking at new areas to generate revenues in what has become a competitive online marketplace. (Source: ?The Company: Background,? eBay web site, last accessed January 30, 2013.)

In September, eBay announced that it had just recorded its 100-millionth application download for its mobility business, and it estimated mobile revenues of $10.0 billion in 2012. (Source: ?Millions of Reasons eBay is Driving Global Commerce?Anytime, Anywhere,? eBay web site, September 24, 2012, last accessed January 30, 2013.)

In my view, the major Internet companies are all looking at new areas of growth. The commonality amongst them is the massive user base that?s available. Even Facebook, Inc. (NASDAQ/FB) is hot on its chart, as it eyes its $38.00 initial public offering (IPO) price.

Facebook Inc Chart

Chart courtesy of www.StockCharts.com

The strength of Facebook is its user base of more than one billion members, which is a significant resource to try to monetize to generate a massive amount of revenues, based on my stock analysis. CEO Mark Zuckerberg realizes this. I remain intrigued by the company simply because of its user base. My stock analysis suggests that if Facebook can monetize its users, the stock will move much higher longer-term.

My stock analysis indicates that the companies that could have the upper hand in the Internet battle are Google, eBay, and Amazon.com. All three are established companies with excellent leadership and hundreds of millions of users. If the daily deal service by eBay works, it could really disrupt the business of Groupon and threaten its ability to survive, according to my stock analysis.

For the time being, I recommend sticking with the market-leading Internet-related stocks: Google, eBay, and Amazon.com. These stocks are also key players in China. A long shot is Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ/YHOO), which under CEO Marissa A. Mayer just reported an excellent quarter. I also like LinkedIn Corporation (NASDAQ/LNDK) in the professional social networking space.

Note: none of the stocks mentioned should be construed as a buy recommendation; they are simply used for illustrative purposes.

Samsung Galaxy S3 mini vs Samsung Galaxy Express Features & Specs Comparison: How Does Each Fare?

By Robert Schoon / r.schoon@latinospost.com | First Posted: Jan 30, 2013 08:41 AM EST

(Photo : Samsung)

Yesterday, it looked like Samsung may be expanding the availability of the Galaxy Express, including in Asia and Europe. The pared-down Samsung smartphone - originally announced in November and available only to AT&T customers for $99 with a 2-year contract - may be available in a store near you.

So how does this mid-range cellphone compare with the more-talked-about new Samsung mid-range variant, the Samsung Galaxy S3 mini? As far as price is concerned, the Galaxy Express and the more expensive Galaxy S3 mini may only be about $100 off each other.

Like Us on Facebook

You may find that both are very similarly stacked. Let's take a look at the specs, and see why the Galaxy S3 mini would be more expensive.

Display
The Galaxy Express comes with a 4.5-inch WVGA Super AMOLED Plus display, which is a little larger than the Galaxy S3 mini's, which comes in at 4 inches. The Galaxy S3 mini also has a Super AMOLED display, with the same maximum resolution, 480x800, as the Galaxy Express. However, the Galaxy S3 mini's display packs a few more pixels per inch, so unless you're going for size (and if you are, look at a phablet), I'd say the Galaxy S3 mini comes out on top.

Memory
The Galaxy S3 mini comes with two options, 8GB or 16GB of internal memory, and with a microSD card, you'll get up to 32GB of storage on the device. The most internal storage on the Galaxy Express is 8GB, but it also has a microSD for up to 32GB. Unless you really need the extra 8GB, it seems pretty close here.

Camera
Both phones sport a 5 megapixel camera, with 720p video capability, and a front facing camera as well.

Processor
The Galaxy Express comes with a Qualcomm dual-core 1.5 GHz Snapdragon processor, running 1 GB RAM, compared to the Galaxy S3 mini's 1GHz dual-core with 1 GB RAM.

Other Features and Considerations
The Galaxy Express will be running the older version of the Android operating system, version 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, while the Galaxy S3 comes with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

The Galaxy S3 mini is a lot different than the Samsung Galaxy S3, but there are some features which it shares in common, which should entice anyone who has ever seen the Galaxy S3 commercials. First, the Galaxy S3 mini comes with some software extras and apps that may make it more interesting though. This includes Samsung's TouchWiz, an interface that runs on top of Android. It features photo-sharing and the touch-to-share S Beam, which shares files when you bump two Galaxy S devices together. There's also S Voice, which is Samsung's Google Voice Actions-enabled version of Apple's popular voice-controlled virtual assistant, Siri.

Hot Dog Marketing Online - ShoeMoney Internet Marketing Blog

A lot of people call me ?The Hotdogman.? I got my nickname from working in the food business, just like Shoemoney. Last week, all the buzz at Affiliate Summit West was about Shoemoney?s book, Nothing?s Changed But My Change, The Shoemoney Story. I picked one up at the Summit and read it on my flight home, it was a pretty good read and a great American Dream kind of tale. I met up with Jeremy on the exhibit hall floor and we had a chat. As it invariably does, the conversation swung around to hot dogs. Since I am The Hotdogman, I guess that?s a good thing; I have branded myself well in the internet marketing world.

As we were talking, Jeremy remarked that being a hot dog vendor and an internet marketer have a lot of similarities. We tossed that idea around for a minute or two, and the more I thought about it, the more I thought he was right. I was a hot dog truck owner and operator for 6 years and I started fiddling around with blogs, the internet, and affiliate marketing back in 2007 when a particularly harsh winter kept the truck closed for a few months.

That?s when I started The Hot Dog Truck, a blog about ?the life and times of a Hotdogman.? I started monetizing my site with Adsense (thanks in part to a certain blogger?s famous photo), did a lot of paid posting, and began experimenting with affiliate marketing. My wife thought I was wasting my time, but she changed her tune when I used my first few months blog earnings to take the family to Las Vegas to visit her folks! She?s been on board with my ?online thing? since. Six years later, the hot dog truck is gone, but the website remains. I also have a stable of 20 or so niche sites and I do freelance writing.

Hot Dogs and Marketing

My transition from hot dog man to The Hotdogman online was fairly easy, I have always been a decent writer and I was in sales since I was ten years old. Marketing online was understandable and doable for me. I decided to give the internet marketing thing a serious whirl when a series of bad luck left me essentially disabled for nearly a year; I got Lyme Disease, bad blood clots, and I broke my knee! The immobility this caused lent itself to spending my days at the computer. I sold my hot dog truck and dove right in to creating websites and marketing various products online.

My first ventures were geared toward what I know, most notably hot dogs. I sold hot dog related courses and products across a series of websites with success. When I was doing this, I?d think back to what made me successful in the hot dog business and applied what I could. The most notable similarity between online marketing and selling hot dogs is the autonomy for the entrepreneur. Both businesses can be one man (or one woman) ventures. As many people who read this know, there is nothing quite like working for yourself. You don?t have to answer to a boss, you do things your own way, and you reap all the financial rewards from your ventures.

Going into the hot dog business is a low investment proposition. Even a shiny new hot dog cart can be bought for less than three grand; if you buy used, that number goes lower. Compared to opening a brick and mortar restaurant, starting up a hot dog cart is short money. The same is true for starting out in internet marketing. I got started with eight bucks and a free host. As time went on, I invested in premium WordPress themes, an email program, more domains, private servers, and other tools, but other than that first eight bucks, I never paid for any of that stuff ?out-of-pocket.? Investments into my growing online ?empire? always came from profits. I don?t know any other legitimate business you can start for eight bucks!

The Hot Dog Cart Principle in Online Marketing

Starting in the hot dog business is a bit more complicated than buying a cart, setting up shop, and hanging out a sign. There are some regulations involved and you need the appropriate permits. You also need to sell. If nobody knows you?re there, you won?t sell any hot dogs; you need to market your business. That involves getting out to the businesses nearby and giving them an incentive to stop by and try your chow. Theoretically, once someone takes a bite of your delicious hot dogs, they?ll tell their friends and co-workers and you?ll be off and running.

The same goes for online marketing. Like any business, there are rules and regulations to follow, so you need to know them before you get started. You could have the best offer or product in the world, but nobody will buy it unless they know about it. Just setting up a website and hoping won?t get you any sales. You need to use proven methods for generating traffic, the online equivalent of letting people know about your offer. Just like offering a free hot dog to get people to try you out, you can offer incentives to take a look at your offer. Think about it, how many free e-books have you downloaded? (I like mine with mustard and relish).

Whether you?re selling hot dogs or an online product, you still need to provide value to your customer. A good hot dog man will have premium hot dogs, fresh rolls and condiments, and he?ll serve them up HOT for a fair price. A good online marketer will have a quality offer or product that gives the customer what they?re looking for, whether it?s a product to solve a problem, an entertaining book, or a deal on the latest gadget, there has to be value for the customer at the right price or else you?re spinning your wheels.

Both businesses are scalable, too. I know many successful hot dog vendors who have moved on to managing multiple carts and trucks and even opened full-on restaurants. The concept is fairly simple and easily duplicated, you just need to find the right people. Online marketing is the same. Once you have a system and a set of processes in place, you can expand and duplicate your business. Hiring the right people is key here too. Make sure you hire and work with people who have complimentary skill sets. I started with one website, now I have more than 20 and I have people I call on for certain tasks that I just am not good at.

Notice in that previous paragraph ?the right people? came up a number of times. Whether you?re selling hot dogs or pitching the latest hot info product, having good people to work for/with you is key. A crappy employee can bring down any small business pretty quick if left unchecked. Whether that employee is serving food that?s under cooked or servicing online customers with an inconsistent attitude, the bad apple can be a killer. Conversely, good people can boost your business. An enthusiastic, friendly vendor brings people back to your cart. A savvy employee who ?gets out there? and helps boost business, whether it?s with good follow through or promotion through their social media networks, can be a great asset to any business.

Not ready to leave the security of a paycheck to start a business? Start part-time! Hot Dog vending can be started as a part time venture. Just work weekend events or find opportunities to set up shop within your existing schedule. The same goes for an online business. You can start on your living room couch! Spend a few hours a day building your business; you?ll know when you can transition to full-time in either venture.

Fun is Good too

Online marketing and hot dog vending are fun businesses. I was always cutting it up with my customers at my hot dog truck and I made many new friends in the six years I was in the business. Hardly a week goes by that I don?t run into an old customer. I?ve even made some good business connections from my old hot dog contacts! Online marketing is fun too. While many relationships are forged online, the same principles apply. Treat people well, be nice, offer good products and service and you?ll make new friends. The one thing online marketing has going for it in the fun department over the hot dog business is industry events. Parties at online marketing conferences ROCK! Hot dog events I?ve attended have been small; while they were fun and informative, there were never open bars in fancy nightclubs with go-go girls!

It all boils down to one thing: good old American entrepreneurship. Despite the woes afflicting our nation right now, entrepreneurship is alive and well in the US of A. Many of the hot dog vendors I encounter on a regular basis are in the business due to corporate downsizing. They chose the hot dog biz for many of the same reasons I listed here. The same goes for online marketing. Many people are content to moan about the economy and wring their hands in despair. The folks who decide to do something about it, whether they start slinging hot dogs or selling stuff online REFUSE to let macro circumstances dictate their future. No matter what the economy looks like, people still need a good, cheap lunch and they?ll continue to by all sorts of products online. Entrepreneurs who decide to capitalize on opportunities will always find success if they go about it the right way.

The most important thing any entrepreneur can do is get started NOW! No business gets started by thinking about it. If you want to sell hot dogs, start scouting locations, research carts, and learn about your business. If you want to get going in the online marketing game, start learning the basics (I hear Shoemoney has a course or two about that). You can have a website up in an hour or two. I know many online entrepreneurs who built a website in one night and were doing business the very next day. Don?t fall into the ?paralysis by analysis? trap, if you want to start a business, START NOW!

Revolutionary cooling system uses lasers

Jan. 30, 2013 ? With the latest discovery by scientists from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), current cooling systems which uses refrigerant harmful to the ozone layer could be replaced by a revolutionary cooling system using lasers.

This discovery, published and featured on the cover of the 24 January 2013 issue of Nature, could also potentially lead to a host of other innovations. This includes making huge Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines, unwieldy night vision goggles and satellite cameras -- all of which require extreme cooling systems -- even more compact and energy saving.

This breakthrough in laser cooling technology can even lead to the development of almost sci-fi like computer chips that cool on their own, minimising heat and thus prolonging battery life for portable devices like tablets and smart phones.

Assistant Professor Xiong Qihua from the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences and the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering had cooled down a semiconductor from 20 degrees Celsius down to minus 20 degrees Celsius. Before this, the cooling of semiconductors by laser has never been proven.

The material, Cadmium Sulfide, is a type of group II-VI semiconductor commonly used in solar cells, sensors and electronics.

"If we are able to harness the power of laser cooling, it would mean that medical devices which require extreme cooling, such as MRI which uses liquid helium, could do away with their bulky refrigerant systems with just with an optical refrigeration device in its place," Prof Xiong said.

"Not only that, but it would also remove the need for compressors and coolants in air-conditioning and refrigerators used in our homes and automobiles, saving space, energy and green house gases which are harmful to our ozone layer.

The potential for a compact, cost-effective, vibration-free and cryogen-less cooling system is enormous, as the global market for energy-efficient buildings is estimated to be worth over $100 billion dollars by 2017, according to reports by Global Industry Analysts (GIA).

"This also translates into the ability to build miniaturised coolers to cool infrared sensors used in satellites for imaging and build self-cooling computer chips suitable for use in portable devices like tablets and smart phones."

Prof Xiong, who leads a research team of 25 people including three undergraduates, is now looking to bring laser cooling down to liquid helium temperature at minus 269 degree Celsius. This is because in principle and theory, semiconductors can support laser cooling down to such a low temperatures.

"Our initial results published in Nature, have shown that it is possible to laser-cool a semiconductor to liquid nitrogen temperature, so we are aiming to reach an even lower temperature, such as that of liquid helium," said Prof Xiong, who had directed the research efforts of his researchers Dr. Zhang Jun and Ph.D. student Li Dehui towards this new area.

This experiment which took three years to complete was funded by NTU, Prof Xiong's National Research Foundation Fellowship grant and the Ministry of Education Academic Research Fund.

NTU's ground-breaking research into fundamental physics and sciences is one of the key components in Sustainability, one of the university's Five Peaks of Excellence, areas of research which NTU hopes to make a global mark in under its five-year strategic plan.

Barges stuck as oil spill jams Mississippi River

Melanie Thortis / Vicksburg Evening Post via AP

Barges wait for traffic to re-open along the Mississippi River near Vicksburg, Miss. on Monday.

By Holbrook Mohr and Janet McConnaughey, The Associated Press

VICKSBURG, Miss. -- With more than 50 vessels idled on the water for a fourth day Wednesday, authorities said they still did not know when they would be able to reopen a 16-mile stretch of the Mississippi River that was closed due to an oil spill.

A plan to pump oil from a leaking barge onto another barge ? a process known as lightering ? had been approved, but it was unclear how long that would take, Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Jonathan Lally said Tuesday. He said the other barge was en route.

Severe weather that was expected to sweep through the area could shut down cleanup operations for a time, prolonging the process further, authorities said.

Crews have been working around the clock to contain and remove oil since the barge, owned by Corpus Christi, Texas-based Third Coast Towing LLC, struck a railroad bridge and began leaking early Sunday. The company has refused to comment on the incident.

Lally also noted that about 7,000 gallons of crude oil were unaccounted for aboard the barge. He said it was not clear whether all of it spilled into the river or some seeped into empty spaces inside the barge.

At least 54 vessels, including towboats and barges, were idled on the river, one of the nation's vital commerce routes.

More than 168 million tons of cargo a year moves along the Mississippi between Baton Rouge, La., and the mouth of the Ohio River, carried by nearly 22,300 cargo ships and 162,700 barges, according to the Army Corps of Engineers. About 3.6 million tons of cargo is handled annually by the port of Vicksburg.

When low water threatened to close the river earlier in January, the tow industry trade group American Waterways Operators estimated that 7.2 million tons of commodities worth $2.8 billion might be sidelined over the last three weeks of the month.

Salt destined for Northern roads moves upriver in January, said spokeswoman Ann McCulloch. "We're still moving corn, soybeans and grain, but also coal and petroleum ... stone, sand and gravel," she said Tuesday.

Barges carry 20 percent of the nation's coal and more than 60 percent of its grain exports, according to the group.

Ron Zornes, director of corporate operations for Canal Barge Co. of New Orleans, said each idled towboat could cost a company anywhere from $10,000 to $100,000 a day. The low end would be for a single boat with a couple of barges and the high end for one in "a system of towboats that acts sort of like a bus system."

"So if one bus is stopped it gums up the whole system," he said.?

Samsung Request for New Trial Denied, Did Infringe Apple Patents, Though Unwillingly

It was only a matter of time before the next episode of the patent war between Apple and Samsung aired. Compared to others, though, this one's plot, if it can even be called that, was surprisingly ambivalent.

Samsung has been trying to get Judge Lucy Koh to approve of a retrial of the patent infringement case against Apple, after the ruling in favor of the latter, which said that many Galaxy devices used Apple technologies unlawfully.

Naturally, Samsung has been doing all it can to get the large settlement payment decision rescinded, and all bans lifted.

Unfortunately for the corporation, the US court has a very different opinion than that of the Dutch court or the UK law system.

Judge Koh has denied Samsung's request for a new trial because it ?would be contrary to the interests of justice.?

She did offer a silver lining though, in the shape of an admission that Apple failed to prove that Samsung willfully infringed Apple's patents.

Samsung argues that the patents were invalid, so the infringement cannot be considered willful.

That is legal jargon for Samsung believing that it was doing nothing wrong when it built those phones and tablets.

This conclusion is far from what Samsung hoped, but it does, at least, mean Apple won't be getting its wish to increase the ?damages? that its rival has to pay.

For those who've forgotten, the jury in the San Jose court, whether or not it was due to the foreman's alleged misconduct, decided that Samsung had to pay $1.049 billion / 780 million Euro, back in August 2012.

Since the ruling supposed that five of the instances of infringement were willful, and the Judge has now decided they were not, the sum may be decreased. No ruling to this effect has been given yet, however, and Apple will surely fight one with all it has.

Get your superzoom on with Nikon's Coolpix P520 and L820

Get your superzoom on with Nikon's Coolpix P520 and L820

Oh, the superzoom camera -- it's not a compact and the lens doesn't twist off, but for one reason or another, this confused category has survived against the odds. So, if superzooms happen to be your shooter of choice, we've got some good news: Nikon's got a new pair to add to the pickins. For those with deeper pockets, the Coolpix P520 might be on order, with an 18.1-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor and a 3.2-inch vari-angle (tilt-and-swivel) VGA display. There's a 42x f/3.0-5.8, 24-1,000mm lens on board, netting you quite a bit of range. It also offers 1080/60i HD video shooting and WiFi compatibility through the optional ($60) WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter.

Casual photographers might be more taken with the Coolpix L820, which still packs a fair amount of punch, thanks to a 16-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, a 30x, 22.5-675mm zoom lens with optical VR, and 1080p video shooting. Unlike its more feature-packed sibling, though, this model uses AA batteries -- which you might be into if international travel is on the agenda (those disposable cells are available worldwide, which helps if you aren't keen on plugging in a charger). Both offerings will hit stores in late February, with the P520 available for $450 and the L820 shipping for $280, in your choice of black or red finishes.

Businesses plan to boost spending, gauge shows

20 hrs.

A gauge of business investment improved in December, a sign that worries over tighter fiscal policy may not have held back capital spending plans as much as feared at the end of 2012.?

The Commerce Department said on Monday that non-defense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, a closely watched proxy for investment plans, edged up 0.2 percent last month.?

Many economists had expected businesses to be more timid with spending late last year because of uncertainty over government spending cuts and tax increases, which had been scheduled to kick in this month. Congress struck a last-minute deal in early January to avoid or postpone most of the austerity measures.?

Monday's data showed companies were still planning to expand their businesses.?

"There's a lot more confidence," said Wayne Kaufman, an analyst at John Thomas Financial in New York.?

The data pushed down prices for U.S. government debt, while giving the dollar a lift against the yen. But stock prices opened little changed.?

The report showed new orders for overall durable goods - long lasting factory goods from toasters to automobiles - jumped 4.6 percent in December, beating economists expectations of a 1.8 percent gain.?

Gains were broad based, with new orders for machinery, cars and primary metals all increasing. Orders of civilian aircraft, a volatile category, jumped 10.1 percent.?

Economists still think economic growth cooled in the fourth quarter as companies slowed the pace at which they re-stocked their shelves.?

But Monday's report suggested businesses expect demand in the U.S. economy to improve.?

In a further sign firms were betting their business will grow, the investment plans proxy for November was revised higher to show a 3 percent gain.?

"It certainly seems to us that companies are slowly but surely expanding," said Tim Ghriskey, chief investment officer at Solaris Group in Bedford Hills, New York.?

The president's turn for immigration reform

Latinos and immigrants participate in a rally on immigration reform in front of the White House on November 8,??

One week into his second term, President Barack Obama will unveil his vision for immigration reform in a speech Tuesday in Las Vegas.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said Monday that Obama's speech at Del Sol High School will be about "engaging" the American people on the topic of reform, which Obama has vowed to push through Congress this year. Administration officials said Obama will go into more detail than before about what he wants the bill to look like and will stress that any legislation must contain a clear path to citizenship for most of the country's 11 million unauthorized immigrants. Such a bill may even be in reach as a demographically challenged Republican Party seeks to win over Hispanic voters. Conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh commented on his show Monday that "I don't think there's any Republican opposition to this of any majority consequence or size."

Carney wouldn't say at a briefing Monday whether Obama would be willing to endorse the blueprint for reform released that afternoon by a working group of bipartisan senators. The senators preempted Obama's speech by a day and released a blueprint that differs from Obama's earlier immigration proposal in some respects. Both Obama and the senators agree that the nation's illegal immigrants should be given a chance to legalize and eventually become citizens if they meet certain conditions, but the senators' bill includes a spate of border security requirements that must go into effect before the immigrants are eligible for a green card.

Leaders in the Republican-controlled House have not released a significant blueprint or proposal.

The president will not release a draft of an immigration reform bill while Congress is making progress on their own proposals, administration officials say.

"[Obama] will continue a conversation with the American people about how we need to move forward and why we need to move forward with comprehensive immigration reform, why it?s important," Carney said of the president's speech. "It?s something that he talked about a lot during the campaign; he campaigned on this."

Watch Obama's remarks here in our livestream at 2:55 p.m. EST.

Tuesday in politics: Obama talks immigration in Vegas, and more

Immigration remains at the top of the Washington agenda Tuesday, as President Obama travels to Las Vegas to rally public support for his proposals for reforming the nation's immigration system.

The president will deliver remarks in a campaign-style event this afternoon at Del Sol High School.

White House officials said Obama would largely endorse an immigration blueprint announced Monday by a bipartisan group of senators, though the president's plan was expected to be more progressive and include a faster pathway to citizenship for millions of people already in the U.S. illegally.

Also Tuesday, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee meets to consider Obama's nomination of John Kerry to be secretary of state. Kerry is expected to win overwhelming approval from the panel, which he currently chairs.

Meanwhile, the outgoing secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, hosts a "Global Townterview," in which she will take questions from young people around the world via satellite, Twitter, Facebook, and Skype. Clinton's last day in office is Friday.

And then there is this: Today is the 170th birthday of William McKinley, the 25th president of the United States. McKinley, who was born in 1843, served from 1897 until his assassination in 1901. It's also the 59th birthday of media mogul/Obama friend Oprah Winfrey.

Guidelines for brain amyloid imaging in Alzheimer's

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Only recently has it become possible to create high-quality images of the brain plaques characteristic of Alzheimer's disease in living people through positron emission tomography (PET). Even so, questions remain about what can be learned from these PET images and which people should have this test.

To provide guidance for physicians, individuals and families affected by Alzheimer's, and the public, the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) and the Alzheimer's Association have jointly published the first criteria for the appropriate use of this imaging technology to aid in the diagnosis of people with suspected Alzheimer's disease. The criteria were published online January 28 as an article "in press" by Alzheimer's & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer's Association and "ahead of print" in The Journal of Nuclear Medicine.

"Our primary goal is to provide healthcare practitioners with the information and options available to provide patients with the best possible diagnosis and care in a cost effective manner," said Maria Carrillo, Ph.D., Alzheimer's Association vice president of Medical and Scientific Relations.

Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC) for Brain Amyloid Imaging with PET in Alzheimer's

While elevated beta amyloid plaques are one of the defining pathologic features of Alzheimer's, many elderly people with normal cognition also have elevated levels of these plaques, as do people with conditions other than Alzheimer's dementia. Therefore, the potential clinical use of amyloid PET requires careful consideration so that its proper role may be identified.

To develop the new criteria, the Alzheimer's Association and SNMMI assembled an Amyloid Imaging Taskforce (AIT) consisting of dementia and imaging experts to review the scientific literature and develop consensus recommendations for the clinical use of this promising new technology.

The AIT concluded that amyloid imaging could potentially be helpful in the diagnosis of people with cognitive impairment when considered along with other clinical information, and when performed according to standardized protocols by trained staff. In addition, they emphasized that the decision whether or not to order amyloid imaging should be made only after a comprehensive evaluation by a physician experienced in the assessment and diagnosis of cognitive impairment and dementia, and only if the presence or absence of amyloid would increase certainty in the diagnosis and alter the treatment plan.

According to the AIT, appropriate candidates for amyloid PET imaging include:

  • Those who complain of persistent or progressive unexplained memory problems or confusion and who demonstrate impairments using standard tests of cognition and memory.
  • Individuals meeting tests for possible Alzheimer's, but who are unusual in their clinical presentation.
  • Individuals with progressive dementia and atypically early age of onset (before age 65).

Inappropriate candidates for amyloid PET imaging include:

  • Those who are age 65 or older and meet standard definitions and tests for Alzheimer's, since a positive PET scan would provide little added value.
  • Asymptomatic people or those with a cognitive complaint but no clinical confirmation of impairment.

Amyloid PET imaging is also inappropriate:

  • As a means of determining the severity of dementia.
  • When requested solely based on a family history of dementia or presence of other risk factors for Alzheimer's, such as the ApoE-e4 gene.
  • As a substitute for genetic testing for mutations that cause Alzheimer's.
  • For non-medical reasons, such as insurance, legal or employment decisions.

"As amyloid imaging becomes more prevalent in clinical settings, medical professionals must understand how to appropriately utilize the test," said Frederic H. Fahey, D.Sc., SNMMI president. "Neurology and dementia experts should order the test only when appropriately indicated, and nuclear medicine and molecular imaging professionals must ensure they have been adequately trained to interpret the results of the scan. Working together, we hope that the information garnered from amyloid PET imaging will aid in diagnosis and play a pivotal role in the development of new treatments for Alzheimer's."

The taskforce acknowledged that the healthcare provider makes the ultimate judgment regarding the care of each patient. The AIT sought to assist this process and identified the following general sequence of events for the use of amyloid PET according to the new criteria:

  1. Evaluation by a dementia expert to assess the need for diagnostic testing, possibly to include amyloid PET if the AUC are met.
  2. Referral to a qualified provider of amyloid PET services.
  3. Performance, interpretation and reporting of the amyloid PET scan according to established standards.
  4. Incorporation of the PET result into the clinical assessment process.
  5. Disclosure of the PET result by the clinician to the patient and caregivers, along with discussion of the result and its management consequences.

Although identifying potential benefits, the AIT concluded that amyloid PET results will not constitute and is not equivalent to a clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease dementia. They said that imaging is only one tool among many that clinicians should use judiciously to manage patients, and that amyloid PET imaging does not substitute for a careful history and examination.

"Because both dementia care and amyloid PET technology are in active development, these new appropriate use criteria will require periodic reassessment and updating," Carrillo said.

PET Amyloid Imaging in Alzheimer's -- An Overview

PET uses radiopharmaceuticals (radioactive drugs) to produce three-dimensional functional images of the brain or other body part. In amyloid PET imaging, the radiopharmaceutical is introduced into the body by injection into a vein and binds specifically to the amyloid protein, enabling visualization of areas in the brain where amyloid has clumped together into plaques. One of the new PET compounds was approved for general use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in April 2012.

  • If a person with dementia does not have amyloid buildup in their brain, then the cause of the dementia is very likely to be something other than Alzheimer's disease. Other causes of dementia include: strokes, thyroid problems, drug interactions, chronic alcoholism, and vitamin deficiencies.
  • If an amyloid imaging PET scan shows that a person with memory impairment has amyloid buildup in their brain, this increases the likelihood that the memory impairment is caused by Alzheimer's disease, but it remains a likelihood, not a certainty.
  • If a person without memory complaints or impairment has amyloid buildup, it does not necessarily mean that they will develop Alzheimer's. Many people have amyloid in their brains but are cognitively normal. More research is needed to understand the significance of amyloid plaques in this population.

Amyloid imaging is not covered by insurance at this time, and costs for the scan are "out of pocket." While costs of amyloid PET are not yet established, and PET costs in general can vary depending upon location, other PET scans are known to cost between $1,000 and $3,000, or more. Nonetheless, the AIT concluded that the proven sensitivity and specificity of the new radiopharmaceuticals for brain amyloid and the known association between brain beta amyloid deposition and Alzheimer's suggest these new radiopharmaceuticals could potentially be helpful in the workup and diagnosis of patients with cognitive impairment.

Supersonic Ping-Pong gun fires balls at Mach 1.2

4 hrs.

Few things capture the attention of physics students like a gun that fires Ping-Pong balls, according to a mechanical engineer who just built one that accelerates the balls to supersonic speeds.?

?You can shoot Ping-Pong balls through pop cans and it is great, it is so captivating, it is so compelling that you can get kids? attention and once you?ve got their attention, you can teach them something,? Mark French, the Purdue University assistant professor who built the gun, told NBC News.

The guns typically work by sealing a slightly-larger-than?Ping-Pong-ball-diameter tube with packaging tape and sucking all the air out to create a vacuum. Once the seal is broken on one end, air rushes into the tube and pushes the ball down the barrel.

?The ball doesn?t fit tightly in the tube, a little bit of air gets past the ball and when it gets to the seal at the other end, that little puff of air gets compressed and blows the seal out of the way so the ball can come out at 600 or 700 feet a second,? French explained.

After getting tons of mileage in class over the past few years ? as well as a divot or two in his classroom wall ??with a gun he built based on a design in scientific journal, he started thinking that he could make the ball come out even faster. And, well, faster is better.

The trick, he figured, was to get the air that pushes the ball out the tube (gun barrel) to move faster. To do this, French borrowed a nozzle design with a pinch in the middle that aerospace engineers use to get air moving at supersonic speeds in their wind tunnels.

As air enters the so-called convergent-divergent or de Laval nozzle, it accelerates as it is compressed, reaching supersonic speeds as the nozzle expands.?

?I thought, okay, I?m going to treat this thing like a little wind tunnel,? he said.?

To do so, he put a convergent-divergent nozzle at the opposite end of the tube from where the ball exists and behind that, a pressure chamber made out of PVC tubing.?

When the chamber is pumped up to about 45 pounds per square inch, it breaks the?seal.

?That pressurized air goes through the nozzle just like it does in a supersonic wind tunnel and accelerates to supersonic speed out the other end and pushes the ball ahead of it,? he said.?

?At least, that?s what we think is going on,? he added. ?We haven?t done any analyses on this ? we are still doing some more tests ? but whatever is going on, it is definitely coming out at Mach 1.23.?

Yes, that?s fast; faster than F-16 flying at top speed at sea level, noted MIT?s Physics xrXiv Blog.?

French and colleagues Craig Zehrung and Jim Stratton describe the gun in a paper posted Jan. 22?on arXiv.org, a server where pre-prints of scientific papers are posted.?

Tucson filmmaker nabs Sundance audience award

A seven-minute short film warning of the perils of catnip has won the Short Film Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival.

Tucson filmmaker Jason Willis captured the prize with "Catnip: Egress to Oblivion?," a tongue-in-cheek take on drug education films.

"I'm completely dumbstruck and amazed!," Willis wrote on Facebook.

"Catnip is all the rage with today's modern feline, but do we really understand it?" Willis wrote in the film's press kit. "Is it a source for harmless kicks, or a potentially crippling addiction?"

"Once and for all the facts about this controversial substance are frankly discussed," Willis said, calling his project a "long-lost educational film that never was."

Shot for a budget of just $25, the film features deadpan narration on the pitfalls of nepetalacton cycloalkane, vintage "psychedelic" special effects, and interviews with wild-eyed feline aficianados of the potent plant, which reportedly comes in such strains as Mau Mau Nip Nip and Persian Haze.

Willis is a designer and musician as well as filmmaker, and performed in such standout Tucson punk bands as the Weird Lovemakers and the Knockout Pills.

The punny short is also replete with subtle shoutouts to some of Willis' fellow local punk rock pioneers ? watch and see how many you can spot.

"Catnip" has been watched nearly 350,000 times on Youtube.

"I won this based on the traffic and hits sent to YouTube, so honestly it's totally because of all of you guys ? the links that you shared completely made this happen. Fucking madness!," Willis wrote on Facebook. "Now I'm going to open a bottle of wine."

Pets displaced by Hurricane Sandy need volunteer assistance

Posted by madelinefish9 on Saturday, December 29, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

Months after Sandy tore through Long Island, over 200 pets belonging to displaced residents are still being taken care of by volunteers at the Nassau County Emergency Pet Shelter.

?We started off with 450 pets when the storm hit, now we have about 250,? said Beverly Poppell, vice-president and executive director of Pet Safe Coalition. ?We have about 120 cats, a bunny rabbit, 2 turtles a beta fish and the rest are dogs.?

The shelter is located in Garden City and is run mainly on volunteers of the Pet Safe Coalition. An organization that?s main goal is to help pets in disaster situations, like Hurricane Sandy. ?We want pet owners to be responsible in these types of situations,? said Poppell. ?Our motto is, ?have a pet, have a plan.??

Volunteer duties include cleaning litter boxes, feeding the pets, taking dogs for walks, cleaning cages and making sure the animals receive personal attention.

Volunteers have come from all over the country to assist in the running of the shelter. ?Our volunteers are dedicated to these animals,? said Poppell. ?We actually had a volunteer from California that was traveling cross-country on horseback and she made a detour here to help us!?

Webinar: How to Write a Winning business Plan

If you missed the webinar on ?How to Write a Winning Business Plan,??you can still watch it below. You get to see how quick and easy it is to create both a dynamic business pitch and a business plan that?supports your brilliant business idea. We?ve also included answers to the questions we were not able to get to during the live webinar. Enjoy! Webinar Q&A

Q: How many people in the company can use LivePlan at the same time?
A: A basic account includes 2 users (the owner and a collaborator) and can be upgraded to:

  • 3 users = + ??9.95 /month
  • 4 users = + 19.90 /month
  • 5 users = + 29.85 /month

Q: Once you save the plan do you save it on your computer or on a cloud server?
A: If you need to download a copy of your plan for printing or emailing to people who want a hard copy, you can do that from the ?Print? section within LivePlan. However, the beauty of LivePlan being hosted in the cloud is that you can access your Pitch, Plan, or Scoreboard from any Internet connection. This allows you to update your planning information and present it (via guest accounts) to lenders, investors, mentors, students, business partners and more. So you can either save a static copy to your desktop, or keep your evolving plan within LivePlan (which we recommend) so you can update it regularly, and share it with others as needed.

Q: (LivePlan vs. standard plans) ?At the end of the year what happens to information/ if no renewal?
A: You have the choice:

  • You can delete your account when you?re ?finished? with the plan and we will delete your plan from LivePlan entirely.
  • Or, you can put your account into ?archive? mode in which case we charge a small maintenance fee ($2.99/mo) and we maintain a secure copy of your plan and account in case you choose to revisit the plan next quarter, year, etc.

Q: Can LivePlan be sold as an affiliate in a package like we have the Business Plan Pro and training sessions?
A: Absolutely! Visit our affiliate page to get set up today!

Q: As far as ROI in the hospitality business, what would be best: a certain % if so what % would be reasonable, a concrete number, etc?
A: It really depends on what kind of hospitality business ? small hotel, large hotel, bar, restaurant, food court, etc. We found this site that gives a very good overview of identifying KPIs (key performance indicators) in the restaurant, cafe, catering, clubs and hotels.

Q: I love the Dave and Busters example you gave during the webinar! Are there any business executives you can think of that would be interested in hearing about a completely unique sports bar/restaurant idea? Good idea to involve people from out of town, or if you are starting in a specific city should you limit to investors from your city?
A: We suggest signing up for Gust.com ? it?s free and you?ll gain access to thousands of angel investors across the globe. Some investors on Gust select industries they are interested in, so you can search to see if any investors are interested in food and beverage or hospitality deals.

Q: As an owner of existing software, is there a price for those upgrading to LivePlan?
A: Since LivePlan is a completely separate tool from Business Plan Pro, the pricing is separate as well. You can either ?pay-as-you-go? at only $19.95 month, or pay for a full year and save over 40%. Learn more here. Keep in mind, LivePlan is not a standard business plan ? it?s the business plan evolved ? where you can Pitch, Plan and Track your growth all in one very easy to use tool. Check out of features page.

Q: Can we create multiple business plans for different companies?
A: Yes, a basic account has the ability to host 3 active plans (with unlimited archived plans) and can be upgraded to:

  • 8 active plans = +9.95 / month
  • 13 active plans = + 19.90 / month
  • 18 active plans = + 29.85 / month

Q: If one uses LivePlan to complete a business plan, does your service include a business plan critic before I present my plan to potential investors?
A
: We currently do not have a service to critique your business plan, but we are hoping to launch such a service late this year. I recommend you follow our LivePlan blog to stay tuned. In the meantime, we recommend you contact a Small Business Development Center or SCORE office in your area (for U.S.). If you?re outside of the U.S. they are several non-profit and government organizations that offer free advising services. We recommend starting with contacting your local university or college system.

Q: If the business plan addresses a sensitive niche in the market, how can you make sure you keep certain information from your business plan private? Also I am wondering if we should we do that?
A: If there?s sensitive information that you need to ensure is not public, I would suggest this:

  1. Create your sharable plan (name it something that you?ll recognize as the public version)
  2. Enter all the relevant data and text but skip anything that you see that requires sensitive information
  3. Once you?ve created and filled in the public plan, go to the My Plans drop down and choose All Plans
  4. Make a copy of the ?shareable plan? and then rename it to something that will indicate it is your internal only plan.
  5. Add the sensitive information to the Internal Only plan and share the public version on the plan with your Lender, Investor and/or Mentors. You can safely remove the skipped sections from the sharable plan as well if needed.

Q: I want to plan a membership campaign for our association, as well as a plan for the development of an archives gallery, I need to plug in the strategic plan for the membership campaign. This is a committee plan and not a business plan. Yes-it will take staff time, but I am a volunteer that will give my services for free. How do you track the potential cost of having to hire a company to develop a membership campaign? Would this software help me to present my points and what it will take to build our membership value?
A: LivePlan?s Pitch page or Scoreboard are both excellent tools for showing value of non-profits and associations. As mentioned during the webinar, you can edit the outline of the business plan to match a Strategic Plan?s outline (i.e. mission, vision, fundraising strategy, board development strategy, program overview, etc.).

Q: What about pitching the development of a plan for setting up the archives gallery that will require special inventory and personeel salaries, as well as what it will take to keep it going- ie, alarms, temperature controls, special handling of archives, etc. Is this the software for me?
A: LivePlan is highly customizable and can be used to create financial forecasts (sales, payroll, expenses, Cash Flow, Profit and Loss, etc) for most any company. You can customize the inputs to show whatever level of detail you need. That said, I always like to stress that for accounting, looking backwards, you need ever increasing amounts of detail. But, with planning, looking forward, you should try to make things as general or simple as possible. It can be a highly frustrating experience trying to forecast incredibly detailed expenses looking forward, especially if a higher level view is all that is required.

Q: There are a lot of sample Business Plans available in LivePlan. Is there a repository of winning plans? ?Does some resource exist like this on the internet?
A: We conducted national (U.S.) ?LivePlan $10,000 Boost? business plan competition in 2012, and saw many plans that were well written. We are in the process of gathering those plans to offer as sample plans. In the meantime, we recommend you check out our library of sample plans on our Bplans free content site.

Q: Can this also be used to pitch and plan an internal plan?
A: Absolutely ? it?s meant for both external and internal pitching. That?s why we set the annual pricing to be affordable for small businesses. It?s only $139.95 to use LivePlan as an internal management tool.

Q: Mortgage industry ? do you have any research on this?
A: Palo Alto Software doesn?t do market research as a service but we do partner with companies that do have that as their main business. You can search for Market Research data for by industry on our site.?

Q: Where can I find investors for health and wellness?
A: We suggest signing up for Gust.com ? it?s free and you?ll gain access to thousands of angel investors across the globe.

Q: Can LivePlan be used to help a ?set up a franchised company, and how can this be done? (that would be getting a location from an established company, such as Jiffy Lube, Macdonalds, etc)
A: The plan for a franchised business isn?t technically much different from any plan for an existing business that?s being bought by new owners. The situation of how the business comes to be is more unique, but the financials are very similar to any plan. The exception to this would be if you were the franchiser, in which case you might want to configure a plan in LivePlan to use as your template and then provide that template to any potential Franchisee?s via Collaborator accounts. This would give the franchiser a good means to getting data from different franchisee?s in a format that makes it easy for comparison.

Q: Most teams consist of 3 people but the basic plan only allows for 2 people. Will it be upped to 3 as the minimum?
A: The basic account includes 2 people (owner + 1 collaborator) plus unlimited guest accounts (guests can view, print and comment, but not actually make changes). Additional collaborators can be added by upgrading the account.

LaCie Blade Runner drive now available, offers standout storage for $299

LaCie teased us at CES with the prospect of a rare high-concept hard drive design in the Blade Runner, but it left out the rather important matter of when we could buy the Philippe Starck-designed storage. As we've discovered, we didn't have to wait long -- the Blade Runner has just become available. Plunk down $300 and you'll get a 4TB, USB 3.0-based external drive that melds a blob-like disk shell with aluminum blades that both cool the main body and create a (minor) conversation piece. Just be sure to hurry if you're looking for a dash of art with your extra drive space, as it's doubtful that the Blade Runner's 9,999-unit production run will last.
