PowerUp Western New York has sent more than 4,000 signatures to Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the New York Energy Highway Task Force in support of repowering the existing coal-fueled power plant in Dunkirk.
Princeton, N.J.-based NRG Energy Inc., which owns the Dunkirk plant, proposes to convert the coal facility to a combined-cycle plant with the generating capacity of up to 440 megawatts, enough to power approximately 352,000 average homes. NRG would build the combined-cycle units to ultimately take the place of the coal units, operate solely on clean natural gas and become operational by 2017.
The centerpiece of PowerUp Western New York, led by Sen. Catharine Young, R - Olean, is the Dunkirk combined-cycle development project, which would provide a number of benefits to the region and state. Among the benefits are improving the reliability of the electrical grid in Western New York and preserving jobs.
PowerUpWNY is a coalition of Western New Yorkers who advocate for a practical energy agenda for the state and support the Dunkirk Repowering Project.
