Does SEO and Business Catalyst make a good match? | SEO Hero ...

SEO Business Catalyst

Is Business Catalyst SEO friendly?

On my exploration to find alternative Content Management Systems (CMS) to easily integrate Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) into websites I stumbled upon Business Catalyst (BC).? The official Business Catalyst homepage on the surface does a pretty good job at selling their all-in-one, fully loaded business website & online marketing solutions tool. ?So in this post I hope to reveal some insight into how BC pieces together with SEO.

What is Business Catalyst?

Essentially, Business Catalyst is a hosted, built in web browser CMS. It allows you to build and manage an online business. ?Adobe?s tagline ?Online businesses, no websites? signifies an innovative way to developing and maintaining a web business.

One of the selling points of BC is that it will cut developments costs, and thus increase profits. BC is primarily aimed at web designers with little or no skills in coding, yet want to build dynamic websites for small businesses. This is good news for less technical SEO consultants or clients as it allows them to make changes to the content without breaking the design.

Business Catalyst SEO Features:

Adding SEO on the Business Catalyst CMS is very similar to other platforms such as Magento and Shopify.? In terms of on-the-page SEO, it?s quite straight forward. You just have to know where to distribute your keywords. ?I?ve put together a list of features BC provides to help users with their onsite SEO:

  • The ability to enter a page title
  • The option to edit the page URL on individual pages
  • Users can quickly edit redirect urls
  • Easy to add a sitemap with just a few clicks
  • Description meta data is editable
  • Built in metrics of recent visits, inquiries, subscriptions

Downsides

As with every platform, it has its limitations and weaknesses. ?I was a bit disappointed that the webBasic package comes with very few dynamic features. For instance, the basic package doesn?t come with a blogging module, which you would think would be standard. The customisation of HTML pages is quite limiting, which means they are just basic pages with no ability to feed in php or any php functionality. Further disadvantages related to SEO uses are:

  • No control over the sitemap.xml
  • No known plans to implement specific integrated SEO tools
  • The 2012 version doesn?t have the capacity to batch upload all page titles and descriptions (which is necessary for e-commerce sites)

Conclusion

I?m a big fan of Adobe Creative Suite products and have used their software for many years and will continue to do so.? From a web designer perspective, having played around with the free version I do think it?s a good affordable choice for designers that need to create dynamic websites on the go, especially those who find it a headache to create e-commerce sites. ?But I would only recommend it for small businesses and clients who have a small product catalogue. ?Business Catalyst has made some major improvements over the years; offering more online marketing tools such as email marketing, web analytics and integrated CRM.? It does a fairly good job of giving options for on-the-page SEO, but it lacks in-depth SEO data, including keyword management, link management, and SEO performance reports.
